Singapore's Success Due To Able Leaders Who Have High Integrity And Are Not Corrupted: Lee Kuan Yew

Singapore has become successful and earned the respect of the world community today because it has been governed by able leaders who have high integrity and are not corrupted, former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew said Friday night.

He said that when Singapore became independent, the country did not have any wealth or resources to develop and, in addition, was facing many threats such as from the communist terrorists and the workers' union and even problems inside his People's Action Party (PAP).

But with a first-class team of able and practical leaders who had strong will and belief in the country, Singapore managed to get out from the bad situation, Lee said at a dialogue session at the Economic Society of Singapore, here.

He said the leaders then, including himself, had to make tough decisions to develop Singapore, including changing the labour laws, uniting the people by putting the Malays, Chinese and Indians in the same flats so that they could mix together, and making the people a workable society.

He said Singapore progressed well until today because it had been managed by dedicated leaders who had a high sense of honour and level of integrity, honesty and competency and were not corrupted.

Lee also said that the country was different from others as it had no room for making mistakes.

Lee, who is currently Minister Mentor, said the country made the right decision by investing in defence and education by allocating the biggest budgets for the two sectors.

Now the "little red dot", which many Singaporeans and others refer to Singapore as, was able to defend itself and no one could just march into the country and take it over, Lee said.

He said the government also made the right move when it introduced English in the education system and put the mother tongue languages of the Chinese, Malays and Indians on equal footing.

Lee said the English language had not only become the world's most spoken language but was also the language of the Internet world, and this had benefited the Singaporeans most.

The former prime minister also said that the present leadership should now look for new leaders to replace them when they retired in less than a decade from now.

He said that if they failed to recruit new leaders, the country would be taken over by the opposition parties who would have their own capable leaders, but he doubted that it could happen. (Bernama)

***** Singapore is of course not a perfect country. To be sure, the island nation has its share of covert discrimination and sometimes obvious prejudice, mirroring the true feelings of sections of the majority community there. But they are nowhere near the type of overt government-sponsored racism prevalent in Malaysia.

One cannot argue with Mr Lee Kuan Yew's claim that
his country is governed by able leaders who have high integrity and are not corrupted. The converse however is true of our own country. We truly are the antithesis of Singapore, but somehow Umno seems to be genuinely proud of that fact!

Totally agree with above. tualang3 needs to move on with the rest of the world and not dwell on doom and gloom. We have to better ourselves without the corruption, greed and racism. Honesty and integrity will be respected highly so as Lee Kuan Yew says. Singapore's sucess is all due to him.

Lee Kuan Yew has every reason to claim that his leaders have hight integrity and are not corrupted. A country short of land and even water can prosper solely on human resources. If not by good leadership and far sighted planning, how could Singapore be what it is today.

When talking about singapore, there are always malaysians always asking "why can't malaysia be like spore?" Makes me crack up because why would we EVER want to be like spore? To be robots, led by autocratic leadership and living in a plastic world? Gee, I know the sporeans can stand that, but certainly not most of Malaysians. Why suddently umno's name being dragged in this discussion? Funny leh

While we must admit that S'pore is a much better 'organized' state', i agree with crankshaft that we do have a more liberal socio-cultural and political environment, if it can be described as so...
S'pore pays its public servants so well that they do not have to 'korek, korek, korek'.
There is also genuine fear of their own ACA, unlike here.
LKY and his proxies brook no dissent: bankrupting and jailing any 'independent' thinkers.
Where's their opposition?
This is in essence the Confucian "Taikor-ism" so prevalent in such societies.
S'pore therefore represents an example of the Orwellian 1984 state - Big Brother will watch over you...!
We have no need to quibble over the success of S'porean economics or their excellent infrastructure.
But have you seen a S'porean with a genuine warm smile? Or a S'porean out of his element, i.e. cannot 'buy' comforts? I have, and believe me it ain't pretty!
The average S'porean is so used to his creature comforts that he remains an infantile milk-suckler in terms of his soul and psyche.
LKY-ians so afraid to change... This is called "corruption of the soul", and definitely more morally insiduous than mere monetry corruption.
Why do you think LKY is so afraid of bloggers?
Do you think we can write this sort of rubbish in S'pore without reprecussions?
Cheers, Menyalaker.

Singapore is singapore. Malaysia is malaysia. Why the comparison. Of course it is easy to control corruption, attitudes, etc of their leaders, how may minster do they have? How many parties do they have? How much the amount of land, population do they govern? Of course it is easy for them because they are a small nation.

There is no doubt in my mind that the UMNO goons are losers. In fact, if they continue in this vein, they will make themselves as irrelevant as MIC and MCA.

Singapore's leaders may have high integrity and their corruption rate is almost non-existent. Their law enforcement is frighteningly efficient.

We, on the other hand, tend to have a little more freedom than they do. But in the absence of a dictator (like Mahathir and Lee Kuan Yew), we are not able to drive ourselves forward as a nation.

There is too much racism, paranoia and sense of entitlement.

Agree with darcwil. Why we wanna compare ourselves with singapore. DOes sporehave 20 million citizens to be taken care of? Or do they even have any natual resources to allocate and use? They are merely middlemen businesses. Of course it is easy to be middlemen than be a manufacturing nation. No corruption, nothing to control, no people to influence.

All the excuses why it does not work here in Malaysia still does not make it right. At the end of the day we have to do what is right as s'pore does and that is get rid of corruption, racism and greed !!

Anonymous,
Singapore is what it istoday because they do not have a bloody racial party. They do not have a party like umno full of putra and putera, there is no such thing a bumis rights. Secondly no one is above the law, corrupted people are dealt with per the law, unlike Malaysia where money launderers caught in Australia is given a ministers post. Malaysia can never ever be even close to what Singapore is today, until and unless we get rid of umno and all racial and religious based parties. It does not matter if the population is 5 million or fifty million, it is clean government that counts.
Sadly Malaysian

Singapore has done well for themselves, that we must admit. But they did not achieve that because their leaders were capable and have high integrity only, they are autocratic too. We can always learn from each other, why breed hatred between neighbours? why not filter out the mistakes and try to emulate the success?
