Malaysian Youth Index Shows No Need For 'Moral Panic.' Oh Really?

Malaysian parents and leaders don't need to press the "moral panic" button yet. According to an official survey, misbehaviour among youths is not at a worrying stage despite the issue grabbing headlines in the media and frequently becoming a topic of public discussion.

The Malaysia Youth Index (MYI) 2006 survey was carried out by the Youth and Sports Ministry's Youth Development Research Institute to gauge the quality of life of the younger generation in the country. The data collected in the MYI showed that most youths were not involved in unhealthy activities like drug abuse, gambling, liquor, loitering, illegal racing, pre-marital sex and vandalism.

The MYI data also showed youths were free of diseases and widely exposed to the media and information technology but a surprisingly low rating of 21 for leisure time pointed to poor participation in sports activities and associations.

**** Come on, do you believe this poppycock? Remember, this 'survey' was conducted by the Youth and Sports Ministry, so you can be sure that they are going to portray everything as hunky-dory. Surveys like these are unreliable and can be 'programmed' to give any result that one desires. In fact this very one can be 'modified' to conclude that the morals of our youth will improve ten-fold if only we build a RM500 million sports centre in London! That's how ridiculous statistics and surveys can get.

In August an independent survey was done in campuses which in fact gave directly opposite results and revealed that there was a High degree of sexual promiscuity and ignorance on campus. How do you reconcile such contrasting conclusions? The best judge still are your eyes and ears and your own conscience.

Take a walk around the shopping malls, restaurants, leisure outlets and the 'nightspots' and you will know that the Sports Ministry's results are fudged. Things in fact are pretty bad and we should not be lulled into a false sense of semuanya OK. Parents have to be responsible for the well being of their children and there is no alternative to that. Be strict with them when you have to and inculcate some good values and a lot of common sense, or else you'll let loose on the streets, specimens much worse than suicidal Mat Rempits.

Statistics and Survey results often lie to fit particular preset conclusions ( esp of politicians ). To be truly indicative and representive of the characteristics of a 'population', scientific methods must be employed and methodology used consistent.

Finally the population must be properly segmented eg race, age, social grouping etc to be meaningful. A fair conclusion can then be roughly made.

I am particularly interested to see how they have segmented along racial lines. Such is the agak agak feeling I and you have.

I am sure the 'real' results will be staggering !

....and unlike what you see in the forgonely concluded crooked 'official' reports!
