Haze - The Indonesian Joget Has Started.
Indonesia today welcomed Malaysia's call for Asean to jointly fight the haze caused by forest fires in Indonesia and hopes neighbouring countries understood its difficulties in overcoming the problem.
Presidential spokesman Andi Mallarangeng said this in response to a statement by Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak that the haze problem would plague the region for years to come unless the countries affected pooled their resources to tackle it. Najib said Asean needed to set up a fund as it was expensive to buy the equipment to fight the haze, such as water bombing aircraft.
Andi said the Indonesian government was doing its best to overcome the problem but its efforts were hampered by the fires burning in peat soil deep in the interior which was difficult to access. "We are hoping the rainy season will come quickly to help us put out the fires," he was quoted as saying today by Antara news agency.
He said Indonesia had accepted the assistance of the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department to fight the haze last year and was open to offers of cooperation. It would be up to the relevant ministries and departments to discuss the technical matters of such cooperation, he added.
The fires in Sumatra and Indonesian Kalimantan on Borneo island have cast a pall of smoke and ash over Malaysia and Singapore in recent weeks.
*** If it was just bloody cooperation that the Indonesians had wanted why the devil didn't they ASK for it earlier? Countries most affected like Malaysia and Singapore are not going to say 'no' or drag our feet or be close-fisted when it comes to helping them. The biggest problem is that they simply can't be bothered. It is the type of leadership they practice and the tidak apa culture which has permeated that country.
Also they have this arrogant attitude that because of their size they are top dog and therefore cannot be told or even adviced what to do. I still remember when we sent in our firemen on a previous haze disaster, the type of problems these Indons gave our men, and it is to the credit of our personnel that they got things done despite the lack of cooperation and sometimes outright hostility that they had faced. Now the same incompetents want cooperation!
This is the start of the Indonesian style joget which they will perform with ease, to please the world, especially the important powers and show that they are a responsible nation and are doing all that they can in overcoming the problem. Of course they are not going to do anything at all. By next year I'm sure, they would have practiced and perfected a new dance to a new tune for the same old haze that will cause more environmental damage and health hazards.
