North Korea Conducts Nuclear Test.

North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported Monday the country has performed a successful nuclear test.

The South Korean government has convened an urgent meeting of the Cabinet to discuss the implications and as well as the response to this dangerous move by the North. Over the past week Pyongyang has repeatedly warned that a nuclear test was imminent, giving the justification that it was part of a deterrent action against any provocative American move against the North.

Over the last weekend both the Koreas had engaged in a skirmish resulting in shots being fired across the De-Militarized Zone (DMZ)

China was informed twenty minutes before the test was conducted.

The test itself is probably less harmful than the likely reactions of the hotheads in the region, especially the US. The PRK probably already has a few of these nasty little devices and the testing is just to let the world know that they have the bomb. It's a pity though that the leadership chose to make the bomb while their children starve. It's a mad regime and the people around them are like zombies, too weak from a starvation diet to rebel. I hope the army will. There must be some decent folks in the armed forces who can stage a coup. Surely things can't get any worse.
