Khir Toyo - Reformed Environmentalist?

The Selangor government has told its local authorities to plant various species of trees in existing open areas and to ensure that no physical development was carried out in the open spaces. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo said about 90 percent of the open areas in the state had been registered and gazetted in the past one year and there was no reason to develop them.

"I have told all municipal councils and local authorities to preserve existing open areas... and if possible, carry out minimal landscaping work to reduce cost. There is no need for a waterfall and what not. Just plant some trees there," he told a media conference.

He said the state government had purchased decorative trees from several states and neighbouring countries to be used as landscaping items and would encourage the people to plant trees in future.

The state government would not allow any open areas to be developed to prevent a repeat of what was happening in Pandamaran, Klang, he added. Some residents in Pandamaran had protested against the construction of a sports complex in an open area which had been used as a recreational park by the public.

"We also need to consider the most competitive maintenance cost in planting these trees. This needs to be considered as we are aware that the people are not ready to pay for a high maintenance cost," he added.

**** How does one trust a man who if given half a chance will sanction the building of 20 storey apartment buildings in a children's playground? When such an enviro-criminal suddenly starts preaching like a true-blue environmentalist and a Greenpeace life member we have to wonder what his real game is. Are elections round the corner or is he in line for some big international award and therefore is putting up an act of being a dedicated conservationist? When and why did this transformation from eco-terrorist to nature preserving statesman take place?

To be fair, in August 2006 he did vow to behave and promised no more mistakes. Of course I didn't believe him then and I don't believe him now. He has always reacted very smartly especially to disasters that can be traced back to his greed for uncontrolled development, as he did after the Kampung Pasir, Hulu Kelang landslide.

I suspect that the current 'green tint' in his speech is probably due to the recent Wangsa Maju landslide in nearby KL and the statement by Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Azmi Khalid that an investigation is being carried out on the soil stability of Ulu Klang, Ampang and Wangsa Maju and that the Government is uneasy over frequent landslides. What do you think? Has Mohamad Khir Toyo had a change of heart and seen the green light or is he acting out another one of those sandiwaras he is well known for?

BTW, Sorry to deviate from your topic, Malaysian. Have you seen today's Sun (Oct 12, 2006)? Turn to page 6. Seen it? Then refer back to the previous day's Sun (Oct 11, 2006), Page 4. Someone is 'taking advantage' of another by observing that the another was not assaulted or harmed when he handed over the first memorandum received by the Indonesian Embassy! Once a mamak, always a mamak!

What A Lulu, looks like you have as much faith as I do in Khir Yoyo oops Toyo!
Jorami Ibni Karakhani, I see your point on the Sun report. As for Toyo, he is no where near the stature of Idris Haron, the May 13 MB.
