Kubang Pasu Umno Delegates Meeting - Latest Info.
The Kubang Pasu Umno delegates conference proceeded smoothly this afternoon which saw the attendance of former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad who is contesting to be one of the division's delegates to the Umno General Assembly in November. The results are expected to be known this evening.
Dr Mahathir, who is also former Umno President, is among 15 candidates vying for the seven elected delegates from the division which he previously headed. Six other delegates are the division's office bearers. Dr Mahathir's name was No. 1 on the candidates' list while his son Datuk Mukhriz No. 10. Each Umno division will send 13 delegates to the three-day assembly comprising seven elected and the remaining six will be the division's office bearers.
Attempts to persuade Dr Mahathir to withdraw from contesting as a delegate to preserve his image as a statesman proved futile.
Dr Mahathir, who helmed the Kubang Pasu Umno for 30 years, claimed recently that certain quarters were trying to block him from contesting but this was denied by Kubang Pasu Umno division chief Datuk Mohd Johari Baharum.
Dr Mahathir, accompanied by his wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, arrived at about 9am, about half-an-hour earlier than Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid, who opened the meeting. Dr Mahathir and Dr Siti Hasmah were seated at the guest section of the meeting hall while the division committee members took their places on the stage.
Dr Mahathir was seen attentively listening to the speeches of Mohd Johari and Mahdzir who is also Kedah Umno liaison chief. When the meeting started, Dr Mahathir and Dr Siti Hasmah moved to the observers' seat at the back of the hall along with 200 other observers.
