Don't Worry About Guantanamo Bay, Look At Our Lockups First, Pak Lah.

Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said Friday the two Malaysians reported to have been sent to Guantanamo Bay must be given a fair trial. "It is important that they get a fair trial," the Prime Minister said when asked to comment on foreign reports that two Malaysians in US custody for alleged terrorist activities had been moved from secret CIA prisons to Guantanamo Bay for trials.

Abdullah said he had asked Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar to get details from the Malaysian mission in Washington on the two Malaysians who were moved together with 12 others to the Cuban bay camp. "I have instructed Syed Hamid to get in touch with our people in Washington to check what is happening," he told reporters.

No information is immediately available on the Malaysians, identified as Mohamed Farik Amin, who is also known as Zubair, and Lillie @ Mohammed Nazir Lep, and their alleged terrorist acts but the reports said they were being held in connection with al-Qaeda-related terrorist activities.

By the PM's statements a few things that I can deduce are firstly that he wants to show the world or at least his target audience in Malaysia, (namely those who still believe that al-Qaeda terrorists are martyrs and heroes who are prepared to mati shahid or mati 'berani') that he cares for all prisoners irrespective of their offences, and has not forsaken these Islamic 'warriors.' Secondly that everything in our penitentiary system is aboveboard and almost perfect and therefore he can see fit to query other nations on their questionable ability to give our terrorist citizens a fair trial. Finally it shows that Pak Lah is either ignorant of the atrocities that go on in our police lockups and prisons or is pretending that such things don't exist in Malaysia. Going by his record in the IPCMC debacle the latter seems a strong possibility.

The Prime Minister should devote more time to the overhauling of our penal system, investigate and punish those who have and are still abusing and sometimes maiming and murdering prisoners in our balai polis and penjara, urgently implement the findings and recommendations regarding the IPCMC and stop wasting the time of the Foreign Minister by sending him on a futile mission to influence the Americans who prefer to call a terrorist a terrorist.

Why bother about bombers and killers. These two man killed so many innocent people in Bali. Our jails are so bad condition and many killed by other prisoners and some police. why are we cari pasal when the terrible condition here is unchanged? PM must think of local people first.
