Stalled Broga incinerator project - Jap contractor demands RM500 million compensation?

Imagine the shock that Ong Ka Ting must have got when he heard that!

The Local Government and Housing Ministry said it is in the dark about a report that Japanese-owned Ebara Corporation, which was awarded the RM1.5 billion Broga incinerator project that has stalled, is claiming RM500 million compensation from the government. Minister Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting said today he had asked for details of the reported claim from the relevant government agencies. "Let me have the details first before I comment," he told reporters.

Ong, who is also MCA president, was asked to comment on a report in Singapore Business Tes yesterday that Ebara Corporation, which has completed the design and proceeded with the viability and environmental studies on the incinerator, filed the claim a month ago. The incinerator, which would have been the region's largest, was awarded to a consortium comprising Ebara and Harta Summa, a local company.

The project sparked a storm of protests from environmentalists and residents in Broga in Semenyih, south of the federal capital, who alleged the incinerator was untested and a health hazard. The residents held demonstrations and obtained a court injunction to stop the project but the order has been set aside.

However, the status of the project became doubtful after the ministry's technical committee decided to have a relook at it which led to speculations that the incinerator might be scaled down or even scrapped.
