Najib Strongly Backs Pak Lah.
If there were doubts about Najib's loyalty or sincerity towards the Prime Minister, he more or less dispelled that with a very firm call to the people to continue placing their trust in Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi following the latter's clarification regarding various criticisms levelled at him.
The Deputy Prime Minister asked the people to accept the Prime Minister's explanation about the allegations hurled at him in good faith.
The explanations show that the Prime Minister is sincere about providing the best leadership for the country to bring it to greater heights, he told reporters after chairing a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Essential Goods, here.
He said this when asked to comment on the explanations given by Abdullah in a special programme entitled "Bersemuka Bersama Perdana Menteri" (Face-to-Face with the Prime Minister), which was aired by the TV3 television channel Monday night.
In the 40-minute interview, Abdullah touched on various criticisms made about him since he took over as the prime minister in 2003, among them those that concerned his administration and his family's involvement in business.
Najib said that the Prime Minister had been frank in answering the issues that had been raised, which gave the people much confidence in how the country was being managed.
He said Abdullah had spoken from his heart without protecting anyone and was confident that the people would be greatly reassured by his sincerity.
Answering a question, Najib said the Prime Minister could not avoid allegations that were of a personal nature as the criticisms had been such.
Also giving his opinion was Umno Vice President Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who said the Prime Minister's explanation Monday night showed that he was truly sincere in protecting the interests of the nation and the people. Asked if former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad would accept the explanation, he said: "That's up to Dr Mahathir, as this is beyond the control of the government or the Prime Minister."
So two top guns have come out in full support, at least openly. What transpires behind closed doors, we are of course not privy to such information. All in all, I feel that the interview has boosted the PM's standing and credibility with the public as well as his colleagues in government. But what of Mahathir's rebuttal? I wait with bated breath.
