Great Advice For Especially Wealthy Muslim Men Keen On Remarrying.

The Women, Family and Community Development Ministry has submitted a proposal requiring a Muslim husband to identify assets jointly procured with his wife before he takes another.

This will enable the Syariah Court to order the husband who seeks permission to marry another woman to nominate the joint assets in the context of what belongs to whom, said Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil.

"We don't want them to divide the assets; we want the husband to nominate the person who will eventually own a particular asset. "This is because we have received many complaints from the Islamic Development Department of Malaysia and non-governmental organisations that the first wife's family is neglected," she said.

Speaking to reporters after opening a seminar on women's rights here today, she said the proposal has been submitted to the Attorney-General's Chambers for consideration. "We don't want to stop any husband from practising polygamy. We just want the first wife's wellbeing to be protected because there are many cases where the first wives don't get anything.

"In this respect, we are not only taking into account the first wife but the welbeing of the second, third and fourth wives will also be protected," she said.

Shahrizat said the ministry had also submitted a proposal to the Attorney-General for the Syariah Court to automatically order a husband to provide maintenance to his wife and children upon divorce. At present, a divorced woman has to apply for the maintenance order.

The proposal would ensure that maintenance is paid and action could be taken on the ex-husband in case of default, she said.

**** All you Datuk K wannabes take note!
