All Communities Urged To Raise The 'Jalur Gemilang'

Yes folks, it's official. Darth Vader of the information Dark-side has spoken and you had better obey, otherwise.....

Information Minister Datuk Zainuddin Maidin wants all communities in the country to raise the 'Jalur Gemilang' to celebrate the 49th anniversary of the country's independence.

He said that based on past experience, the Chinese community in urban areas were less sensitive to the call to raise the Jalur Gemilang unlike the rural Chinese who were more cooperative.

"I don't think the shop owners have any prejudices towards the national day celebrations, but they are just insensitive to the surrounding atmosphere or they are just too busy with their business," he told reporters after the handing over of sponsorships for the Jalur Gemilang Merdeka Expedition 2006 (KMJG 2006), here Tuesday.

The KMJG programme, which is being held in conjunction with the National Day celebrations, aims to draw the interest of all strata of society, including the private and government sectors, to participate in raising the Jalur Gemilang.

Zainuddin said he did not want any quarters to have the negative perception that the National Day was an important occasion for the Malays only. He also wanted the people to understand the purpose of raising the Jalur Gemilang.

The media and educators must convey to the whole community, especially the younger generation, the real significance of raising the national flag to celebrate National Day.

He said it would be meaningless if the Jalur Gemilang was raised, but various criminal activities like murder and drug abuse were on the rise every day. (Absolutely correct Datuk Zam, so why are you forcing the issue?)

Perhaps in future years when your plan to 'tone down' reporting of crime by the media succeeds and the people are gullible enough to believe that we live in a crime-free country, you can give the clarion call to raise the standard and all of us, rural and urban, Chinese and non-Chinese, will be there with you. Until then please don't make too many statements in public. It causes the blood pressure of many of us to rise.
