Oh, Oh! Looks Like IWK Is About To Raise A Stink.

The Kuala Lumpur High Court today dismissed with cost a judicial review brought by a couple against the Magistrate Court's decision which ordered them to pay RM4,978 to Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd (IWK) for sewerage charges. With the court decision, it will mean that IWK had a locus standi to take action against the owner of premises if they failed to pay sewerage services charges to IWK.

Unless that decision is overturned by a higher court, it looks like that the majority of the public who see no reason for paying these leeches, are in deep shit. With the court decision on their side, you can bet your last ringgit that IWK will not be pushing or prodding us anymore and would probably threaten legal action at the drop of a one sen coin.

I still can't understand why we have to pay these people even one ringgit when it is the duty of the local councils to take care of sewage disposal. If IWK are still insistent on doing the local council's dirty job then it is for the council to pay them for services rendered. Instead, the government passes legislation allowing this consortium to make billions at our expense and now they have legal validity as well. I for one will refuse to pay them until this case is heard at the highest court and a verdict either way is given. If that verdict should be in favour of IWK, then as a law-abiding citizen I would settle all my outstanding bills. Until then IWK you had better shove off.

IWK does a better job than many local councils in treating sewerage. Users should pay for this service otherwise the local govt would end up subsidising rich property owners(who own several properties). Alternatively Local councils may have to increase quit rent to indirectly pay IWK. How efficient are local councils in pursuing defaulters of quit rent?.
I know IWK has been filing cases against other defaulters pending the outcome of this case and have advised friends to pay up for services rendered.
However I have been astonished recently to know that IWK imposes a standard rate of RM 8 per month on a dwelling unit regardless whether it is a single storey terrace house or an expensive bungalow in the city with a swimming pool. Is this true?
