AirAsia Orders 40 More A320 Family Aircraft

Low cost carrier AirAsia has signed a contract for 40 more A320 Family aircraft and taken another 30 on option, Airbus said in a statement Thursday. This bring their total orders for the Airbus Single-Aisle Family to 100, it said.

A total of seven A320s are currently in service with AirAsia. "Over time they will completely replace the Boeing 737-300 fleet currently operated by the AirAsia Group, which comprises AirAsia in Malaysia, Thai AirAsia in Thailand and AirAsia Indonesia," the statement said. All A320 aircraft will be configured with 180 seats.

"The A320 has heralded a new era for AirAsia. The sophistication of these aircraft has enhanced our image and brand and enable us to capture a wider market segment than previously," AirAsia Bhd's group chief executive officer, Datuk Tony Fernandes said.

"The superiority of the A320s in terms of fuel burn, maintenance requirements, increased capacity, wider cabin and larger cargo payload, has allowed us to have greater operational efficiency, while ensuring that our cost optimisation programme remains as the lowest in the world," he said.

AirAsia is one of many low cost carriers (LCC) from the Asia Pacific region to introduce A320 Family aircraft, with 12 LCC from Australia, India, Indonesia, Japan, New Zealand, the Philippines and Singapore already having the aircraft in service.

**** Compare this success story with the pit in which MAS has dug deep into! Now MAS wants to give Air Asia a run for its money in the low-cost sector. If you think you are a big boy then take on others your own size and prove your mettle. There is no pride in competing and even winning at the lower level and then flopping miserably in the big league.

The success of Air Asia and the concurrent dismal failure of MAS has valuable lessons for the government. If you're going to listen to the likes of Hishamuddin Tun Hussein who screams "Malay agenda" whenever crucial decisions are to be made, then we can expect failure after failure to be the norm. Sometimes you have to be brave enough to accept that appointing persons who fit into this so-called agenda may not be the best strategy and courageously select someone who can deliver the goods and not merely boost our ego in the short-term. You have to decide which is more important - the prolonged wellbeing of the country and its people or the satisfaction of narrow jingoistic instincts.

Its sad when one thing goes wrong ones race get the bashing. The failure of MAS is due to a lot of factors including politicians per se, not just due to a single race was heading it. If Air Asia success is due to the CEO's race then blimy there should be more success stories from the same race right; and all Malays should be living in sheds. The Malaysian political scenario exist with race seperation be it UMNO, MCA, MIC and etc. Since we the masses give power to them due to these issues then thet will definately keep harping on it..
