Anwar Ibrahim - Wounded Stalking Tiger Or Subdued Blogging Mousedeer?

It has been quite some time since Anwar Ibrahim was freed from prison. One would have reasonably expected him by now to come out with some firm indication of the political direction in which he is headed.

However as far as the local political scene is concerned, except perhaps for those privy to his inner thoughts, opinions and strategies, the common man is left wondering what this capable and talented person is up to now. Apart from news of him that is more focussed on the outside world there is no concrete steps that are apparently being taken locally. Or is there?

Do a Google search on him now and the buzz is about his possible candidacy for the UN Secretary General's post. In the Middle East he is better known now for his chairmanship of the Future Foundation, a mainly Arab concern.

He has of course earned valuable political points and admiration for not screaming retribution or overtly scheming to exact revenge on Dr Mahathir after returning from his prolonged sojourn in prison. He has by and large remained above the fray in the current spat between Mahathir and the Pak Lah government, giving his much sought after opinion only when absolutely necessary.

Political observers say that while he has kept his channels of communication with the present government wide open and active, he is not exactly enamoured by the performance either of Pak Lah or some of the members of the Cabinet. There have also been insinuations that while he is mentally prepared to get back to active politics, the hard lessons of impatience has sunk in deep and he is this time around prepared to wait it out as things unravel for the current government and Umno.

Also to take into consideration is the larger than life figure of Khairy Jamaluddin looming over the horizon. Whatever may happen Khairy is someone who cannot be ignored and has to be factored into any decision that Anwar might take. Some of Anwar's well-wishers are also getting slightly jittery that he has taken to blogging like a duck to water and while his jawapan after jawapan give some insight into his thinking and even indirectly hint at his future plans, perhaps they fear that this might end up as his future vocation if he does not do something dramatic soon.

Given the nature of Malaysian politics in general and Umno's in particular, it is impossible for us who are outside the 'loop' to second-guess his next move. However past experience tells me that when the opportune time arrives, he will most definitely stake his claim and it will be so forceful that few would be able to resist or refuse him. This is a continuing saga.
