Malaysia's Election To The UNHRC. A Case Of Wrong Timing.

On the 9th of May 2006, Malaysia was elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for a three year term.

On the 14th of May 2006, The Article 11 Forum in Penang was disrupted by henchmen of 'God knows who' carrying anti Inter-Faith Commission banners. While the police looked on these goons successfully hijacked and forced the abrupt ending of a gathering that was legal and had not touched on any subject these thugs feared would be discussed.

On the 28th of May 2006, the police, especially the FRU ruthlessly broke up a public demonstration against the recent fuel and electricity tariff hikes arresting about 20 people in the process.

What excellent timing!! Tell me what credibility will our country have to talk about human rights worldwide when she just blatantly violated her own citizens' rights? It does make the election of Malaysia a mockery of sorts. However we are in good company. Guess who else are esteemed members this time around? China, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia - each one a specimen of human rights violations of the highest order. Birds of a feather perhaps?

According to The Sun, rights advocates point out that Malaysia is among those that have ratified the least number of human rights treaties and conventions. It has yet to ratify the two basic international human rights bills! - The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR).
Malaysia has ratified only the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC).

We are unfortunately in the same league as Myanmar, Pakistan and Singapore when even neighbouring countries such as Indonesia, the Philippines and Thailand have ratified most of the important international human rights laws such as the ICCPR, ICESCR, CEDAW, CRC and the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.

Angeline Loh, an exco member of Aliran says the immediate steps Malaysia should take are to find ways to increase respect for, and prevent abuse of, human rights, especially in prisons, police lock-ups, and immigration detention centres as well as violence against women, and gender, racial, religious, and economic discrimination.

Final Question: With such an 'impressive' charge sheet behind it, how the devil did those duffers elect Malaysia to the United Nations Human Rights Council?
