PM Raps Authorities On Landslide.

In a direct reference to the landslide at Kampung Pasir, Hulu Klang, Selangor, on Wednesday evening that left four dead, the Prime Minister wanted authorities to act on developers who don't adhere to the laws. He pointedly said "what is important is that don't just give warnings; if they ignore and continue with their misdeeds, take action."

Let us see what 'fuming' Khir Toyo has to say to this. After all he's the mentri besar and technically and morally the buck stops in his hand. The proverbial buck; big bucks I'm sure he knows how to handle 'smoothly'.

Don't Just Give Warning, Take Action On Developers Says PM.

Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi today wanted authorities to act on developers who don't adhere to the laws pertaining to development on hills or slopes to ensure no recurrence of landslide. The Prime Minister said warnings are not enough to stop them from ignoring the rules on safety. If no stern action taken, the developers would never heed to the rules and regulations and it would only compound to the problem. "What is important is that don't just give warning and if they ignore and continue with their misdeeds, take action," he told reporters after officiating the 2006 Penang Bumiputera Entrepreneur's Expo at the Seberang Jaya, Expo site here. Abdullah said this when commenting on the landslide at Kampung Pasir, Hulu Klang, Selangor. He said, apart from that, steps must be taken by the local authorities to inspect periodically the hills or slopes being developed with housing or other projects. Abdullah also urged the Public Works Department (JKR) to do the same especially during long wet spells. "The experienced engineers must conduct checks especially when it rains continuously two to three days as this may cause landslides," he said.

The Prime Minister said it has been long decided that the developers should avoid cutting too many trees when developing hills or slopes as this could weaken the soil structure. Refering to the incident in Hulu Klang, Abdullah said he was informed by the Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Khir Toyo that the landslide probably occurred as the soil became too heavy for the retaining wall to hold after the rain. Abdullah wanted the incident to be a lesson for all parties concerned.-- BERNAMA

**** See how cleverly Toyo has passed the buck to the 'heavy soil'. Very soon he'll be another convert to the 'Act of God' school of thought. I hope the PM doesn't buy his story or his sandiwara. So much is Toyo in the news that ducky wants him to be PM!! Good one ducky.

As for the people living in the surrounding areas of the landslide tragedy, life will never be the same again. Read some of their comments (Courtesy Malay Mail)

Some of the residents, who were told to evacuate soon after the tragedy, returned yesterday to find their homes riddled with cracks. When The Malay Mail visited the area yesterday afternoon, all except two of the 16 families, had vacated their homes. The two families were packing up their belongings and furniture.

Nur Huda Jamal, 40, a corporate communications assistant manager: “I am on two-day compassionate leave and had to ask officemates to help out as my husband is away on business.
We were told to move out after the landslide. Some of us were offered to stay for four days at the Flamingo Hotel. How am I going to live like this? Look at the slope. When it rains, I am sure there will be soil movement."

Another resident, Jasper Kaur, 37, who works as a secretary with an embassy, blamed it all on the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) and the developer. “I feel like strangling the MPAJ! Other residents, including a lawyer, had lodged many complaints with MPAJ, the developer and its consultant, following the minor landslides.” The door to her partially-collapsed back- yard could not close, while cracks had appeared on the wall of her living room.

A resident, who is a lawyer, had been in touch with MPAJ, the developer and its consultant about remedial measures ever since the minor landslides occurred in 2004, but no action was taken. “I don’t get it. Maybe the authorities want to see more deaths before they act.”

So after all that we find that many complaints have been lodged but NOTHING was done. No point fuming now. As the PM says take action!
