The Explanation Of A Libidinous Imbecile.

"If the dress was not sexy, the incident would not have happened!" Thus spake Penang Municipal Council president Datuk Abu Bakar Hassan, displaying dramatically the entire wisdom of his years, stored within his tiny brain ensconced in an equally small cranial cavity.

The above was this nitwit's response to a complaint that a closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera in the City Hall was zooming in on the thighs of women journalists instead of council proceedings. Abu Bakar was unhappy over the “sexy” attire worn by some women reporters during council meetings.

On Friday, a reporter spotted the image of a woman’s thighs on the CCTV monitor in the control room and alerted other journalists who complained to council secretary Ooi Chin Loo. New Straits Times journalist Melissa Darlyne Chow, 23, who lodged a police report yesterday, said she was surprised by Abu Bakar’s “sexist” statement.

“He's implying that I was not properly attired and that I deserved the unwanted attention,” she said.

**** If he is representative of the Penang Malay, no wonder the poor sods are marginalized. If this is the best person that the Penang Malays can think of for the high position that he holds, then I fear that their state of marginalization is not going to end any time soon. It is also symptomatic of the rot that is setting into the party that selects cretins like Abu Bakar.

The CCTV monitor incident itself is probably a mischievous act of a person with a little voyeuristic predilection and all it required was a dressing-down from a superior. Instead this oaf gave it a moralistic twist, blaming the 'sexy' dress. Often those that clumsily attempt to appear pious are the most lecherous of perverts. I don't know in which list to place Abu Bakar in, but I wonder if he is on any list that the ACA has been publicly talking about lately.

Finally, an advice for 'sexily' dressed lady reporters. When covering government departments in the future, please 'cover' and dress appropriately. For 'proper' dressing guidelines I refer you to that sartorial super wizard Howsy.

Update 11/13/06: (In the NST)
Penang Island Municipal Council president Datuk Abu Bakar Hassan has denied making sexist remarks in connection with the CCTV peeping-tom controversy involving a reporter.

He claimed to have been misquoted by the media although all reports on the issue on Sunday were almost similar in content on his remarks. “I merely said that there should be a proper dress code for reporters covering council meetings... I never said the reporter involved in the incident was dressed sexily. I was misquoted," he said today.

He was asked to comment on the controversy after New Straits Times reporter Melissa Darlyne Chow lodged a report that a CCTV camera had been used to zoom in on her thighs for 15 minutes. The incident allegedly happened during a full council meeting that Chow, 23, was covering last Friday. The following day, Abu Bakar was quoted as saying that the council was looking into the dress code to avoid a recurrence of the incident, a statement that insinuated that Chow had to bear some of the blame in the matter.

Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon later rebuked Abu Bakar for his sexist remarks and said the latter's comments were improper. Asked if he will apologise to the reporter, Abu Bakar said he will wait first for a detailed report on the incident. He added however that appropriate action will be taken against the council worker responsible for the footage.

Meanwhile, State DAP members today called for Abu Hassan’s sacking. Its action team chief, Tham Weng Fatt, said it was irresponsible for Abu Bakar to pass such comments. He said the council president should apologise to Chow, failing which the DAP will organise a protest on Nov 27 when the State Legislative Assembly convenes.

In a related development, Northeast district police chief Azam Abdul Hamid said that the police have obtained an investigation order from the Deputy Public Prosecutor. He said they will proceed with recording a second statement from the council worker who operated the CCTV camera. It is learnt that the operator who was in the control room at the time of the incident is in another State. He will be returning on Wednesday and police will record his statement then.

In the meanwhile, for New Straits Times journalist Melissa Darlyne Chow, it was work as usual and the incident didn't stop her from reporting this story today:

Barber pleads not guilty to charge of stealing panties.
A barber claimed trial yesterday to stealing a pair of panties outside an apartment complex at Paya Terubong earlier in the morning.

Wong Choon Seong, 27, pleaded not guilty in the magistrates court to committing the offence at 12.30am. Magistrate Ahmad Hidayat Md Nor set bail at RM2,000 and fixed June 18 next year for trial. Wong was charged under Section 379 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum seven years' jail, a fine or both.

I just blogged this also in my blog. Qualified as Municipal Council President?

This is an insultation to women. If he is in the country which practice gender equality; he needs to apology in public and maybe a political suicide to him.
