Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. A Perplexing Malaysian Enigma.

The heart attack suffered by Dr Mahathir this morning got me thinking and when I had lunch with a couple of friends, a multiracial tightknit group of buddies, it turned out that I wasn't the only one who had put on the thinking cap. (It's sad that these days one has even to specify that one has lunch with a multiracial group of friends while in the good old days the words 'group of friends' were explicitly understood to be multiracial.)

During the candid discussion over lunch it seemed that each of us had considered the scenario of a Malaysia without Mahathir. The Tun has been so much a part of the lives of Malaysians for nearly 25 years that it is difficult to imagine a world without him. Take the current accusations of corruption and abuse of power against government leaders and their families. Who else can expose them or berate the leadership as effectively as the 'old man?' No one and absolutely no one has the ability to arouse so much of emotion and varied reactions from the people as Dr Mahathir can. Not even the Tunku could have matched the Tun for sheer charisma and drawing power.

It was during his premiership that the Malaysian economy 'came of age' and we were firmly entrenched among the better performers in the economic field worldwide. It's said that it is human nature not to prize or appreciate something or someone until it or him/her is no more there. That may well come true in the case of Dr M when his time in this mortal world is up. The amount of hatred and hostility towards him both by those who felt betrayed and cheated by him as well as those ingrates who stood to gain and did gain handsomely during his tenure, is regrettable and even considered disgraceful. In the current spat with the government he had received a lot of flak. Yet he soldiered on, oblivious to the change in tide and his own increasingly isolated position. While he professed and claimed that he had the larger interest and welfare of the nation in mind, he was publicly reviled and castigated by long time opponents and erstwhile friends alike and was even asked to behave like a pensioner. That too by a member of the Royalty whom the Tun had stood resolutely by at a time when the Sultan was most vulnerable.

While I don't consider myself as an admirer of the Tun nor do I harbour any hatred towards him. As an individual, like others I worked hard to achieve whatever little I have without any aid from Dr Mahathir and neither was I a beneficiary of any government largesse (not that I would have minded if I had been!) Yet I, along with others in our lunch group still feel some sort of affinity with the man in a familial sort of way. He had been up there in the PM's chair for so long as the leader of the country that without many of us realizing it, he has become a father figure for the nation; the same way the Tunku was several decades ago.

This sudden news of the heart attack somehow caused alarm bells to ring and lead to the realization that he is not going to be around forever and forced me to ponder with trepidation what Malaysia will be like without him. Love him or hate him he has always been there, through thick and thin and brought us out of the worst economic crisis that we had ever faced, almost unscathed. Now the nation under the current leadership along with the extra constitutional appendage represented by Khairy Jamaluddin is poised to face the worst political crisis in our history. Wouldn't it be good and safe if the steadying hand of Dr Mahathir was there to tide us through this as well?

I must say that I disagree with your closing statement, Malaysian, that

"Wouldn't it be good and safe if the steadying hand of Dr Mahathir was there to tide us through this as well?"

Dr. M's penchant of playing the Race Card in order to consolidate and maintain political power is to be abhorred. Remember Suqiu? While many bloggers have often condemned the U.S. for its history of Ku Klux Klan, they ignore the fact a true blue Klanner existed right here in the boondocks of South East Asia. And a doctor no less.

As for Development, well, let me just say that thinking of constructing tall, tall buildings or large airports isn't exactly original. They are good ideas, but to say Malaysia needed someone like him around in order to get anything built is an insult to a lot of M'sians. What, do we all look like children to you, Dr. M? And by the way, for a self-proclaimed visionary, you missed out on the Bio-Tech revolution, letting the S'poreans get a jump on us!

In respect of Mamak Khairy, let us recap Pantai Holdings and MISC, for the benefit of Dr. M's memory (he seems to be losing it when it comes to this issue). Fair is fair, as I say. Dr. M, your sons had to let go of those companies under immense pressure, just as Mamak Khairy had to. While Pak Lah may have some failings in curbing his SIL's antics, at least he had a precedence to look up to. Che Det, ingat lagi cogankata Kepimpinan Melalui Teladan?

As for the economy, me being ignorant and all, would note that the KLSE has touched 1000 points, and this without any rumours of government linked funds intervening in the market. And under Pak Lah, the Ringgit marked to market to a basket of currencies, and is no longer fixed at RM3.80 to a dollar, which was one of the reasons for skyrocketing property prices since 1997. Pak Lah admits he is no economic supremo, so he delegates it to capable persons to do the job. Unlike some two-bit General Practitioner pretending to be Alan Greenspan. And, despite many who would disagree, the increase in fuel prices was a storm in a teacup. Even the ordinary Americans are paying market prices for it, unlike us, and to think the Yanks are said to be in Iraq for the oil. Sheesh.

As for police state punchline, well, we have read TheSun expose on the Gucci wearing councillors of Selangor and the good that it has wrought. We have see Anwar released under Pak Lah, as well as charges being dropped against Sukma. Oh, did I mention a couple of suspected terrorists who were supposed to be depoted to Gitmo, got released from ISA as well, under Pak Lah. Of course, there were other shortcomings as well, such as the Article 11 issue. But all in all, it's been pretty good, after 22 years of straight-jackets and ball-gags, to be able to write and print sundry and all? And don't forget, there is still only ONE Operasi Lallang to date...

It is now a question of legacy. Dr. M's legacy, I believe, would be that,

He Built Many Buildings. And Institutionalize Croniysm, Corruption, And Nepotism.

As for Pak Lah's I hope it won't be,

He Had Good Intentions. Unfortunately He Did Not Get Around To Institutionalize It.

I would generally agree with what robin goodfellow overall.

Recently Dr. M has been serving a purpose by asking some trenchant questions, but would Malaysia really benefit from having him back with the reins of power (via a proxy, maybe)? So that he can pilfer the EPF at will, for example? As he criticised the current government for NOT doing.

I find his complaints of 'police state' have some justification - but hypocritical in the extreme (i.e. Ops Lallang, etc.); especially when his claims to be silenced by the media are plastered all over the front pages of the said media itself. OK - we don't know all of what he says, but there doesn't seem to be an awful lot of difference from what he gets reported as saying on Malaysiakini - for example - and what the MSM reports...

What about the international shame caused to Malaysia by locking up Anwar on blatantly cooked-up charges of sodomy etc? Not forgetting innocent bystanders such as the driver, etc. All of which have been overturned under the present government, which shows a somewhat greater respect of the rule of law.

And remember, much of what is coming to light with Zakaria, one-eyed Jasin, etc. is evidence of long-standing practices in UMNO, not just recent developments. And as the person who led the party (and therefore the country) for 22 (?) years, Dr. M. bears direct responsiblity for that.

Let's not let nostalgia cloud our eyes, and turn our gaze to the future, which - as The Malaysian is right to point out - IS looking rocky.

There is also no love lost with me. I exiled myself to a foreign land due to UMNO's policies during his watch after watching his original promise to tackle corruption, et al. going down into money politics.

Yes, one can say he did great things in his time. Have we thought if someone else could have done better?

Remember, that during his tenure, the ringgit slid from premium to the Singapore dollar to 2.30 below par. Economic progress is relative in this instance. Suffice to say that most are not poorer for it, but it could have been much better.

We would not be holidaying at home alone, but the world could have been our oyster, if not for RM3.80. In fact, he even raised the cost of a passport to discourage travel abroad except for UMNOputras and such like.

What benefits has the Petronas Tower brought the common man? Nothing.

What has PutraJaya brought the common man? An isolated distance away in the boondocks to see our leaders.

We started at PAR with Singapore, why are we 2.30 behind them now?

What I can say is that, at least, we survived, despite Tun M.

Much said and much thought over of all the recent development in M'sian politic scenario...Most of M'sian commoner will agree that during the whole tenure of Tun M,how our economic grew, how we re-bound each time the economics of our country was hit hard...but at the same time all of us were still having the thought of all the nepotism, croniysm, corruption, police country and much more that are said over now.
During his tenure as the premier,Tun may have not realized all the implication of his governance had against the common folks...maybe unknowingly or maybe with one oye shut..God knows..
But now as a commoner,a man who has limited power over the Pak Lah's Goverment, he realized what nepotism, croniysm, corruption and others can do against him(Tun himself). When even one of the greatest man in Malaysia can't have his voice heard, then where is the platform for the rest of other M'sian's especially the minorities with their greatest leaders always on ' yes sir' mood.
Now only Tun can realize, the effects of his style of politic, effects him back.
But a good thing for M'sian..At least now what we want to know is surfacing up...
touch your inner soul and ask...
If you,me or others who are common folks, can our voice be heard as our Tun's voice,to cause the vast number of our country's clowns to pull up their pants...
Give the Grand OLd Man his chance to correct the faults his goverment did for 22 years...
What we said or done is judged as we near the judgement day...To all those office bearers, carry out your job responsibly and to the rest of Malaysian let Tun be whom he is..At least he's one of us now....

TDM is now asking the questions that you and me had alwas wanted to ask, but could not b'cos of the straight jacket we were in.TDM having left his throne suddenly was hit by a reality check, on how frustrating it is not being able to get straight answers, or how blatantly people in power abuse their positions! When he was on the other side he just couldn't see or did not want to see these abuses. Thus, it is my prayer that he will recover fast, and be the watch dog for the man in the street.! Finally he is serving the rakyat!
