STPM-Matrikulasi: Gerakan Gives Its Views.

Gerakan has no objections to the use of the matriculation system and Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) qualification for universities' entrance, but wants the criteria and mechanisms applied to the former to be reviewed.

Its deputy president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon in clarifying the matter, said the party had never called for only one system to be used for varsity entrance, but a review was needed so that students' perceptions of the two systems were more positive.

He said that this was because the STPM was based on a single nationwide examination whereas the matriculation system had two components, a country-wide matriculation examination and a performance evaluation conducted at each matriculation centre.

"When the two components are combined, there is confusion and doubt as some matriculation centres might give higher scores while others lower," he said when approached at a Gerakan delegates' conference, here Friday.

"For us, both systems should be retained, but what we raised was for uniformity to avoid unhealthy competition," he said.

Koh said this when asked to comment a newspaper report which quoted Penang Gerakan Education Bureau chief, Cheang Chee Gooi, as saying that the party would defend a resolution seeking for a meritocracy system to be used for entrance to local universities. Cheang had said that the party did not object to a meritocracy policy but wanted only one system to be used for universities' entrance. "It's the criteria and mechanisms used that we are calling for a review," said Koh, adding that because the interview with Cheang was done over the telephone, what Cheang had said might not have been very clear.

He said the party was not trying to challenge the matriculation system but that there had been confusion about it, not only between matriculation and STPM students, but also among matriculation students themselves. "Let there be two systems, but which are on par with each other, so that entrance to universities is done fairly," he added.

**** As talking about unfair admission standards and discussing about back-door entry to universities by the under-qualified and sometimes downright hopeless may be construed as seditious, no comments will be made!!
