62,256 Registered Labour Force Still Unemployed, But We have A Million Foreign Workers!!

Isn't it logical that in a country with millions of foreign workers, both legal and tanpa izin, there should not be even one unemployed citizen? But logic is sometimes magic, for in our fair country we have, at least on record, a total of 62,256 workforce registered at the Employment Division of the Manpower Department who were still unemployed as of last May.

A total of 30.5 per cent were with Malaysian Certificate of Education (MCE) qualifications, 11.4 per cent owned vocational certificates, 5.3 per cent with Lower Secondary Assessment (PMR) certificates, and 0.6 per cent without paper qualifications.

According to the statistics, 64.8 per cent of those registered were unemployed, 29.2 per cent had working experience, and six per cent were either with experience working in a family business or self-employed.

A total of 56.1 per cent of them were aged between 20 and 24 years, 23.8 per cent between 25 and 30 years, 11.6 per cent aged above 30, and 8.5 per cent between 15 and 19 years.

The statistics also said that new vacancies until last May, as reported by employers through the Electronics Labour Bourse, stood at 41,663 posts.

These vacancies include legislators, senior officers and managers (111), professionals (2,264), technicians and associate professionals (658), clerical staff (1,357) and services and shop workers, and salespersons (5,522).

Other vacancies were skilled workers in agriculture and fisheries sectors (4,236), artisans (3,325), plant and machine operators and fitters (12,878) and labourers (41,663).

**** Apart from a mismatch between qualification and job availability what could be the other possible causes for this unemployment? One reason could be that this jobless lot is perhaps too choosy about the work they prefer to do. Understandable. But rather than be lazing at home doing nothing and being a burden to parents or others who are financially supporting them, is it not better to do at least something to earn some cash and feel good instead of being a freeloader?

It is not easy being jobless especially when you are young and energetic. The mind might be diverted to more sinister things. More importantly you need cash on a daily basis to merely survive the day and each passing day makes it even more difficult to go back to the same source, whether the father or elder siblings, for pocket money. It's a terrible way to live out your youth.

So all of you reading this, please pass on the message to your unfortunate, unemployed relatives and friends; grab any decent offer that comes along and keep busy while keeping a look out for a more promising appointment, which hopefully should materialise in the near future.

Have you seen our labour union bodies recently requesting government for fixed minimum wage?

Majority of our youngsters are not choosy about the job. It's the majority of the employers exploiting the cheap foreign labours. If the rich country like EU, Japan etc adopt the same practice like Malaysia, I think most of their citizens would be jobless like us.

Why cann't our government regulate the foreign workers like S'pore & other advanced countries. If those labour intensive/low tech industries are only suitable for cheap foreign workers, then let them be relocated to those countries like Bangladesh, Indonesia, vietnam etc. Don't import their social problems to our countries. This is the practice of those advanced countries ie export/relocate the industries outside, not the other way round. Proper screening, don't accept those low tech/low wage/labour intensive Taiwanese companies who are only interested to employ cheap foreign labours only. Let them invest in Vietnam or Kampuchia.

anonymous, obviously you are one person who knows what you are talking about in these matters. Please do give your input on other issues too. Better still take an 'assumed' name so we know its you. Cheers.
