Why Is Umno Running Scared Of Dr Mahathir?
Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohd Radzi Sheikh Ahmad asked Umno state committees to monitor ceramah on current issues, especially those that could undermine the strength of the party. He said it was up to the individual state party chief to monitor and evaluate each ceramah to ensure it would not be used by the Opposition to promote their political interest.
Referring to the plan by Umno Padang Besar division chairman Datuk Zahidi Zainul Abidin to invite former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to address a ceramah on Aug 26, he told reporters that the Perlis party leadership would be responsible to monitor it.
Umno Perlis chief Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim said Wednesday that disciplinary action could be taken against Zahidi if the ceramah was gate-crashed by Opposition party members.
Come on!!! Why should a gargantuan political entity like Umno have to monitor ceramah organised by their own partymen? By his statement he has opened the way for all kinds of assumptions and inferences. Any one reading his call for monitoring ceramah cannot be blamed for thinking that he, and by extension Umno, don't trust their own party members.
It doesn't make sense to talk about gate-crashers when every step of the way the law has to be complied with, including obtaining police permits; and with the cops on surveillance how can anything go amiss? Unless that is being used as an excuse to prevent any meetings with their former boss, ex-PM and current nemesis, the redoubtable Dr Mahathir.
Would it not be better for the members to have a no holds barred discussion on the issues raised by Dr Mahathir and get their doubts clarified once and for all, rather than preventing them and thus forcing such matters to be talked about in hushed tones? If you disallow discussion then you must have something to hide;this is a valid inference isn't it? It is also an open admission that this largest political party in the country is mortally afraid of its erstwhile leader and mentor.
