26 Indians Charged With Attempted Murder In The Wake Of Anti-Discrimination Rally In Malaysia

Twenty-six ethnic Indians have been charged with attempted murder in connection with an anti-discrimination rally in Malaysia last month, a lawyer said Tuesday.

The defendants pleaded innocent to charges of attempting to kill a police officer during a clash at a temple compound outside Kuala Lumpur on Nov. 25, said lawyer M. Manoharan Malayalam.

The rally, involving 10,000 people, was the largest protest in at least a decade involving Indians, the country's second-largest minority population after ethnic Chinese. They had demanded equality and fair treatment in Muslim-majority Malaysia.

"It's very shocking," Manoharan told The Associated Press. "This is a clear victimization of the Indians by bringing forth a malicious prosecution that is race-based."

Attorney General Abdul Gani Patail said the policeman received stitches on his head after being attacked with bricks and iron pipes. "This has nothing to do with race," he told the AP. "We follow the law. It applies to everyone under the sun."

Manoharan said the 26 Indians were earlier arrested during the rally and about half of them have already been charged for illegal assembly. They were released on bail but police rearrested them at their homes before dawn Tuesday in a surprise raid, he said.

They face up to 20 years in prison if found guilty, he added.

Indians, which make up 8 percent of the country's 27 million people, say they suffer discrimination because of an affirmative action policy that favors the majority Malay Muslims in jobs, education, business and government contracts.

They also complain the government is becoming increasingly Islamic and is denying them their religious rights, citing the demolition of dozens of Hindu temples.

Ethnic Malays form about 60 percent and control the government. Chinese make up a quarter of the population and generally are much wealthier than Indians, most of whom earn low incomes and work in menial jobs.

The government denies that discrimination exists, and has accused the rally organizers of trying to create racial animosity. Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has warned he might enforce a security law that allows indefinite detention without trial to prevent future demonstrations. (International Herald Tribune)

***** This is a vile and malicious move by the authorities and the A-G true to form is acting like an Umno pimp. The above is definitely a clear case of racial discrimination and selective prosecution. Do you think that the government would have dared to do the same to the other ethnic groups at this juncture with impending elections? Ironically this is the government which proudly claims Malaysia is a 'genuine' democracy and that the country's democratic system is fair and transparent! Malaysia Boleh!

I am disappointed that the authorities have proven yet again that because they are in authority they can bully the rakyat into submission. This is an outright dirty way to tell us rakyat that we will be taught a lesson if we oppose them. It is as good as using the ISA on the people! It is so foolish to put an attempted murder charge for this incident. So if the charge is valid, what about the other case where the police fired live bullet into the crowd? Isn't that attempted murder too? Mr. PM, let's be fair here. Please do not lead the country as if there's no tomorrow and you want to achieve everything today. Just remember that you are a religious man. You claim to put God before everything else. Let's fear God for God asked us to love our fellow brothers. Please don't let this tyranny continue.

Firs there was Court Order preventing illegal assembly and protest march. Further, there was no permit issued for such a demonstratition, walk, to deliver protest note , petition, whatever to the British Embassy.
Then there was this gathering of planned, deliberate and intricately networked Indians professionals and others to challenge the law and order of KL in particular and MALAYSIA as a whole to embarass and even bring down the government.( Lawyers in Hindraft, Bar Council and opposition political parties ) have altogether worked in unison to achieve such motive. Finally there was street violence, assault and bodily harm caused to the police personnel by Hindraft demonstrators acting completely outside and in total defiance of
the Rules of Law and Order.
The large majority of Malaysian public and visitors to KL were very very angry. We find your collective conduct as barbaric and utterly DISGUSTING. Anti establishment group ie Hindraft( ILLEGAL )and supporters with honour and respect, justifiably must take renponsibilty for thier unbecoming conduct as reasonable citizens of this country.
Police, AG and other related authorities pl exercise ACTION failing which pl step down. There are enough good people aound who could do the job better and more effectively to safeguard the safety and security interest of this nation.

Overkill? I'd say BIG TIME overkill!

We are BEYOND boleh!! Heck, this mythical policeman with the few miserable stitches on his head from being attacked with bricks and iron pipes is DA BOMB!!! I wanna meet him!! I wanna shake his hand!! I wanna get his autograph!!

He makes triple-H look like a wuss. The Rock is a sissy next to him. Cena is a ninny. Stone Cold is a wimp. They could never take on 26 guys all at one time.

Not our cop. He must be one heck of a tough dude. Imagine being able to fight off 26 guys who were hell-bent on murdering him and living to tell the tale.

Not one, not two, but twenty-freaking-six men!!!
