"IGP Promoted Corrupt Officers," Says Bintulu MP. "Musa's Prerogative," Says Sarawak CID Chief!
It is the prerogative of Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan to promote any deserving police officers, Sarawak CID chief SAC II Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah said Tuesday.
"The IGP must have his own reasons...his wisdom in promoting anyone within the force. He is after all responsible for the day-to-day running of the force," he said.
Any allegation or speculation against any police officer did not prove anything as a person was innocent unless proven otherwise, he said in response to Bintulu MP Datuk Sri Tiong King Sing's criticism of Musa for promoting at least four senior officers in the state who he alleged were involved in corruption.
On the on-going Operation Cantas to wipe out the gangster menace in the state, Tun Hisan said the public perception was that the situation was much better now in the state.
"We have arrested almost all the gang leaders although I've got a few more names. It is a matter of time for us to get them," he said, adding that the operation would be a continuous effort. "After we have arrested all the top leaders, we will zero in on the second in the hierarchy or down the line," he said.
To date, the police have arrested 23 leaders under the operation, the latest being the arrest in Kuala Lumpur a few days ago of the elusive Sungai Sadit (Sibu) based "Ah Nong" Gang leader who had escaped there when the operation was launched.
Tun Hisan said the police had also arrested a man who had tried to take over the "Lee Long" gang here after its leader, Wong Leh Yin, was arrested here on Feb 27.
"When Leh Yin was arrested and imprisoned, the man who is his relative, took over the hierarchy. We had him arrested and built up the case against him. He is now detained in Simpang Renggam," (Bernama)
***** The word prerogative has been much misused and abused as of late. It is the prerogative of the PM upon advice from the Chief Justice to appoint yes-men of doubtful competence to high judicial posts. It is the prerogative of the PM to appoint ancient relics to important portfolios in the Cabinet. It is now the prerogative of the IGP to promote corrupt or at least suspicious characters to higher, more powerful office in the police hierarchy. Prerogative yes, but it should be used carefully and impartially. Appointing undeserving officers and those with tainted reputations will in the short and long term cause much damage and lower the morale of honest men and women.
