Selayang Dog Killers Back Down

The stupid plan by the equally idiotic Selayang Municipal Council whose officials launched a competition earlier this month offering cash and other prizes to people who catch stray dogs in the town of Selayang, came to an ignominious end today.

The controversial Dog Catching Campaign was scrapped and the buffoons in the Council finally decided to do what they should have done from the beginning -- work with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and other animal-loving non-government organizations.

Only last week the
Selayang Municipal Council defended the program, in which the council pays 20 ringgit for each dog that is delivered alive by people to their local community associations. However animal welfare activists said there were more effective ways to curb strays, including sterilizing dogs and punishing owners who abandon animals and have long accused city councils of endorsing cruelty to dogs, especially by catching strays using violent tactics that injure or kill the dogs.

Dogs are considered unclean in Islam, and most owners are from the minority ethnic Chinese and Indian communities.

It is hoped that this episode would serve as a lesson for those in authority to look before they leap and think twice before they encourage the unnecessary killing of animals which are not to their liking.

Now that this is over, let us prepare ourselves for the next one. If anyone really think that the council has learn anything from this episode, think again.

I won't go so far as to say common sense prevail but rather, they back down because they got wind that the elections will be coming and they have just shelved this matter for the time being.

Haven't you noticed that many of the things which considered unclean or "haram" in Islam are not only tolerated but cherished by non-Muslims ?
Dogs, alcohol, pork, gambling...

More and more government administrative decisions are made through an Islamist lens, and you can be sure of more such fractitious incidents in future.

Sometimes I get really really pessimistic about this country's ability to survive into the future...

I am a muslim and live in the municipality of Selayang. Among the sentiments expressed, I agree that MPS is doing a lousy job. The residents in my area have lodged reports, complaints you name it regarding stray dogs, squattering temples etc. etc. but all that has been to no avail (and I am a MUSLIM!).

One of anonymous's statement caught my eye "Haven't you noticed that many of the things which considered unclean or "haram" in Islam are not only tolerated but cherished by non-Muslims?...(and he goes on)."

Well, all I can say as a normal citizen in Malaysia like anonymous, in any country in the world, there will always be: (1) a dominant group and (2) minority groupS.

I used to be facinated in the 'equal opportunities for all argument' made by the west especially in America. Having studied and stayed there for a few years, I came to the conclusion that equality in its actuall sense will NEVER exist. Americans in general are amongst the biggest bigots I have ever met.

In any country, every group will have to work to protect their own specific interests. In this process, it is essential that everyone knows where to draw the line (including the dominants).

Yes I agree, I long to see a truly Islamic state established in Malaysia (I am NOT a PAS supporter!). However, the Islamic state that I have in my mental picture is totally different from what I know many (non-muslims & muslims alike) think a Muslim state is.

I have just turned 40 this year. Through all my experience living in Malaysia, mixing with all types of people at home, school, workplace etc., I now see this country has to resolve two main issues with respect to its multi racial composition:

1) transparency in administration
2) fairly distributed opportunities for all (not equal opportunities!)
