Jail This Greedy Bugger

The Perak Poultry Dealers Association is insisting on selling chickens at RM6 per kilo in defiance of the ceiling price of RM5.60 during the upcoming festive season.

Association chairman Jimmy Chong Tong Sing said it was impossible for dealers to sell their chicken at RM5.60 per kilo, when the dealers’ retail price was RM5.70 per kilo.

“We cannot possibly survive based on the ceiling price set by the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry,” he told a news conference here yesterday.

The ministry had announced a ceiling price of RM5.60 per kilo in the retail of standard chicken (with shank, head, liver and gizzard) and the super chicken variety (without shank, head, liver and gizzard) at RM6.25 per kilo.

The new prices would take effect from Thursday to Oct 20 for Hari Raya Aidilfitri, and from Nov 1 to 15 for Deepavali.

Chong also warned that there could be a shortage of chickens in the market as chicken farmers had cut down on production to reduce their losses. “Currently, there is a 20% shortage of chickens in the market,” he added, noting that chicken farmers had informed dealers that supply could be disrupted if the ministry maintained the ex-farm price of RM3.65.

Appealing to the ministry to reconsider the ceiling price, Chong said it had remained unchanged for the past 10 years. The association, Chong said, had through the Federation of Livestock Farmers Association of Malaysia, tried discussing the matter with the ministry but to no avail.

“The price of goods has been steadily increasing. No one will want to do a business which makes losses,” he added. (The Star)

***** If this greed monger dares to defy
the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry's ceiling price, then he should be made to pay for his avarice. Jail the son-of-a-gun.

you should say the same for the Association of Petrol Station Dealers. They're as greedy as the poultry association. The petrol dealers complained credit card charges are high but it was reduced more than a year ago at their request and now they want to pass the buck?

It's better for you to be objective in your comments.

ROFL. When the government buy 1000% markup of tool book, isn't a 10% increase on the chicken price sound "reasonable".

BTW, I prefer to check root of the problem .

The problem is with licencing, quota, pricing cap, subsidy and etc - they are have price distorting effect. Best would be to leave it to market forces.

Yes, I agree. Leave it to market forces to decide. Better still, allow free import of chickens & other food stuff without any APs or restriction (except health checks)!
I don't like price increase of any consumer items, but please donot biased against the chicken farmers/dealers/retailers only. Others are equally as "guilty" or bad. The worst is the so called "protected industries" like Proton cars in the past. We pay through our nose for a lousy Saga/Wira/Gen 2.

Fully agree with the other comments. The Govt impose increasing costs on many items yet producers of products are not allowed to raise prices.

The source of all these lie on the laps of Umnoputras.

businessmen venture into business to earn a living and make money. if the government wanted to set a ceiling price for certain product, they(the governemnt) should give more incentive such as tax relief etc...

it is not fair trade to force these businessmen to sell at a price that are not comfortable to them.

my advice... seek oversea markets!

in ireland, the price for 10kgs of cooked chicken breast are selling at Euro 35.00 and 15kgs of raw chicken breast are selling at Euro 65.00. presently, Thailand and Brazil are the only countries monopolise these trade!
