National University Of Singapore Bows To Political Reality

Interesting piece of news from Channel Newsasia, published here for your reading pleasure.

Johor Sultan in Singapore to accept honorary degree from NUS

The Sultan of Johor will be in Singapore from April 12-13. Sultan Iskandar Ibni Almarhum Sultan Ismail is here at the invitation of the National University of Singapore to accept an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws.

This is in recognition of his steadfast leadership of Johor and for his valuable contributions to relations between Singapore and Johor.

Sultan Iskandar will be accompanied by his wife and family, as well as Johor's Chief Minister among others.

President SR Nathan and Mrs Nathan will host a lunch in honour of the Sultan and his wife on Thursday.

And later in the day, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Mrs Lee will host a dinner for them.

During his visit, Sultan Iskandar will visit the Urban Redevelopment Authority and the SAF Commando Headquarters. His wife will visit the National Museum and the Malay Heritage Centre.

She will also have an orchid named after her.

***** His Royal Highness I'm sure must be extremely pleased to receive the honorary doctorate. Keeping in mind the Sultan's rather 'colourful' and 'eventful' past, this varsity recognition did come as a surprise. I wonder if the
Iskandar Development Region (IDR) has anything to do with this belated academic honouring of the Sultan? Alas even the best of universities have to bend and bow to political realities.
