Malays Need New Paradigm Shift - Najib. But Can They?

In a frank and introspective assessment of the Malays the DPM said that they need a paradigm shift to ensure their struggle to build a civilisation is achieved and their domination in politics can also be realised in other fields like economy and education.

He said that having the highest number of drug addicts and HIV/AIDS sufferers was not something that the Malays could be proud of and those were not the Malays "we are fighting for. We want Malays who highly value their language and culture and are successful in all fields, and Umno must be the force towards the paradigm shift."

"The biggest challenge faced by the Malays is how to translate their political dominance through Umno into achieving dominance in other fields like economy and education so that a civilisation can evolve," he added. "To achieve the objective, the Malays needed a paradigm shift."

His is indeed an honest account of the realities on the ground. How he plans to achieve this 'shift' is however the real problem. The subsidy mentality of the average Malay can be said to be the biggest stumbling block to any qualitative improvement in their economic or educational standard. Getting things the 'easy way' is already deeply entrenched in their mindsets and the government must take full responsibility for their laissez-faire attitude.

Umno politicians and leaders can't have it both ways. On the one hand they want to perpetuate affirmative action until eternity, wielding keris and parang to emphasise their demands and intentions. At the same time they expect industriousness from the very people they have lulled and dulled into inaction. 'When something is given out free why work for it?' is a normal human reaction. So they, the Umno leaders, have to choose. World class achievements the hardworking way or low standards for a long time to come, with continued spoonfeeding? You want a paradigm shift, you make the decision. Don't expect it to drop from the sky!

Terkinja-kinja best giler menari macam hantu

Apa hobi orang Melayu
Terkenal dengan budaya malas dan lesu
Berlepak buang masa tak jemu-jemu
Atau baca majalah Mastika cerita hantu
Tengok telenovela dari Filipina dan Peru
Sambil makan junk food kacang dan muruku
Mana tak gendut berpenyakit selalu
Kalau nak berlagak melayu nombor satu
Asal bergaya sanggup makan nasi dan toyu

Boleh tak jumpa mereka di kedai buku
Atau di perpustakaan dan majlis ilmu
Atau ambil kelas kemahiran di hujung minggu
Ada tapi kurang sangat ke situ
Kenapa Melayu jadi begitu
Nak salahkan sapa ibubapa atau guru
Pemimpin negara atau raja dulu-dulu
Ayat lazim di mulut ialah malas selalu
Nak harap kerajaan saja bantu
Terutama sekali kontraktor kelas satu
Tak habis-habis gaduh nak jatuh sapa dulu
Dan suka sangat dengan budaya mengampu

Sampai bila kita nak tunggu
Bangsa Melayu jadi bangsa termaju
Boleh, dengan beberapa syarat tertentu
Pertama dengan banyak menguasai ilmu
Kata nabi ikutlah al Quran dan sunnah ku
AlQuran yang diturunkan 1400 tahun dulu
tapi apakah yang kita tahu, cuma baca nak halau hantu

The limerick posted by Lulu is super. That says much about a community raised on special privileges and illusions of ketuanan. If there is any paradigm shift to be had at all, the first shift is towards a change of mindset. The Malays must opt for a more open mind about the way they see themselves in relation to other Malaysians and be less arrogant.
