Datuk K - Siti Nurhaliza; The Much Awaited Celebrity Wedding Of The Year
By Syed Azwan Syed Ali.
Who would expect the marriage of a girl who rendered her first song at the age of 12 in her birthplace Kuala Lipis many years ago, will become the much awaited "Wedding of the Year"?.
That is exactly what Malaysia's number one singer Siti Nurhaliza Tarudin, 27, will experience when she officially ties the knot with 47-year old businessman Datuk Khalid Muhamad Jiwa, better known as Datuk K, this Monday.
Moments of happiness of the pop diva adored by many since the past 11 years, will be shared by over 26 million people in the country as TV3 will show them live. It will be the first wedding of a Malaysian artiste to be broadcast live on television in Malaysia.
What is so special about Siti, as she is affectionately called, that the private television station obtains the exclusive rights to broadcast the ceremony? Bernama posed this question to Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia's broadcasting and mass communication lecturer Prof Madya Dr Asiah Sarji. She replied: "Siti has certain values that make the social system in Malaysia accepts her as a public figure whose reach extends to all races and all age, education and class groups."
Her wedding impressed upon them unlike the marriage of a royal couple or one involving an influential figure or a politician which would only directly affect certain social classes, she said.
"The Siti Nurhaliza factor itself cuts across all levels of society," she said and explained that the public idolised Siti not just for her melodious voice but also her fine attitude and pleasant character.
She said each member of the society felt that Siti belonged to all Malaysians and they believed she had the right to get all the attention wherever she went and whatever she did. Previous "Weddings of the Year" were those involving singers-cum-actresses Ziana Zain and Erra Fazira with their partners.
Certainly, the aura surrounding the Siti-Datuk K marriage is even greater because ever since the couple announced their marriage plan on July 17, the media went into a frenzy, with daily reports on the run up to the grand wedding. Siti is well known in the region with legions of fans not only in Malaysia but also in Singapore, Indonesia and Brunei.
The solemnisation ceremony will be held at the Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory Mosque on Aug 21. Their wedding ceremony, for invited guests, will be held at the Exhibition Hall at the KL Convention Centre (KLCC) on Aug 28. Another reception will be held in her hometown in Kuala Lipis, Pahang, on Sept 3 for family members, media and fans.
The Aug 28 date has a special significance for the couple - it will also be the 38th wedding anniversary of Siti's parents.
Dr Asiah said Siti was a member of society whose achievement was always shared and enjoyed with the people unlike other celebrities whose success was measured based on their popularity.
Therefore, it was not surprising if about 1,200 specially invited guests comprising fellow artistes locally and abroad would glisten the event, she said.
The fact that Siti was an "ordinary" girl before she came to the limelight also helped her image, she said. "Siti doesn't have a high academic qualification, she doesn't come from a wealthy family but she is a woman with talent, who rises from the ground and her values are of the Malays," said Dr Asiah.
Siti Nurhaliza, who shot to stardom after winning an RTM talent quest in 1995, has 14 albums under her belt. "These are seen as a victory for the masses. She has successfully placed Malay values at the right place and becomes a Malaysian icon who rises to the top gracefully," she said.
Dr Asiah did not deny that some people might be unhappy with Siti's choice as Datuk K was much older and had been married before. Datuk K, the chairman of Malaysian media company Ace Group, divorced his wife of 20 years, Tengku Zawyah Tengku Izham, last year. His four children with his ex-wife are aged eight to nineteen. Everyone had the right to give their views and Siti must also be prepared for face them, she said.
"It is natural to be suspicious, whether the impact is positive or negative, they all want to know, because they are like guardians to Siti. They want her to be happy. Siti feels Datuk K is the ideal man she has been waiting for and the audience has allowed it because they love her," she said.
Media Prima Bhd Chief Executive Officer Datuk Farid Ridzuan said the couple picked TV3 to show their marriage ceremony because of its wide coverage in the region and supported by sister networks under the media conglomerate. Sources from TV3 said 50 crew would be involved in the solemnisation ceremony at the Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory Mosque and 80 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre reception.
Dr Asiah said TV3 knew that Siti would draw a large audience to the wedding and this would be translated into profits for the station through advertisements. "They know if the ceremony is carried live, the audience who will watch it is big and corporate bodies want this kind of attention from the audience," she said.
Dr Asiah said she hoped TV3 would carefully design the format and concept of the live coverage to avoid any negative reaction or excessive reverence towards Siti. "The wedding should be portrayed as an attempt to make the young generation believe in the institution of marriage and with it, Siti will always be respected and loved," she said.

After Syeikh Nasrallah of Hezbollah annouced their victory over the Zionist Regime of Israel I decided to do some further reading on the Zionist agenda and I started with the 911 tragedy on WTC New York on 2001. These are my findings to date.

Eh!!!! Siti????
She and he got the money, up to them how grand should it be. Too bad, most Malaysian says "merampas laki orang", "menghancurkan hati orang" and all sort of commrnts. In Islam, every Muslim should feed their family with "halal" income, not from dirty money, dirty buisness, eg. income from brewery, gambling, corruption. There are rumours saying Datuk K had brewery factory in Australia. Well, Allah the judge, the Great, the Merciful. 2) How come Siti not aware of what she has done, greed, assets, or what ever it is, only Allah knows. 3) Maybe with the spell from bomoh's, Siti fell to her knees. 4) What misdeed we have done, we, or our family, will get a fair share from what we have done from Allah. So lets think about it, Allah blessed us with brains (Iman), if all is good, the outcome will be good.
I admire Siti too. She has good a great voice.
But I cant help but lament why didnt young eligible bachelors in Malaysia or overseas didnt pursue her.
I'm sorry to note that academic person like Prof Madya Dr Asiah Sarji focus heavily on one of the top songstress in this country besides the diva Sharifah Aini, Ning Baizura, Ella and few others. I see and hear nothing special about her singing and style except she won a lot of coveted trophies. That's just her luck. The performace at Royal Albert Hall, London, it was arwah Sudirman Hj Arshad first Malaysian singer to perform there with success! In the field of academic, she managed to achieve 3rd grade in SPM-nothing to be proud of as role model other wise it's a mockery for those who achieve the highest level of academic excellence!C'mom don't be blind not to realize that there are other things we must care and look for in life i.e. achievement in the field of academic excellence for the betterment of challenging and tested lane. So, let's the so-called wedding of the year be their personal event so that all Malaysians can focus on most important things in life to accomplish for the prosperity of Malaysia, tanah airku
First and foremost, Siti Nurhaliza is a singer with good moral values that is soo lacking in our society especially in her world of singing, hence she is a good role model when it comes to good morale values to the society at large ( just put aside her academic qualification etc). Secondly, at this day and age of media technology, it is good to know that promoting good manners can be done by having these kind of singers. Thirdly, being very successful must have scared away all the younger bachelors who are not only single but actually not eligible in terms of not being rich enough for siti. So, do the math and think who else should siti marry if not a royalty or a successful businessman who is at par with her...or not?
Due to my overseas posting, I am following Siti's wedding news on the net (mind you I am not even a Siti fan). But I was prompted to write in, as I was so sorry to read a comment by "Anonymous 10:14 PM MYT".
(1) Luck alone does not give you a lot of coveted trophies, sustain a career for 11 years, commercial endorsements and make you rich. To achieve these, first you need to be born with talent and then you need to work hard to make it big and even harder to maintain a career like what Siti has accomplished in an industry where new players (in this case singers) keep popping up. I will use "That's just her luck" to describe Paris Hilton, but not on Siti who come from nothing to make more money than you or me put together in our lifetime.
(2) Our society has emphasized too much on academic excellence. We are growing into a society which snubs those that do not do well in their studies as well as those that is not well to do. This is very sad indeed. Does academic excellence make a person a bigger role model than another that does not pass standard 6? Does academic excellence guarantee success in life? And with higher academic excellence does not mean that you will also have higher morale values.
Examples : Bill Clinton, have high academic excellence and became President of US but he definitely not a role model (remember his sexual relationship with Monica Lewinsky when he is still in the oval office and married). Bill Gates did not finish school and he is successful today. David Gan did not finish primary school and cannot read, but work hard from a shampoo boy to become a celebrity hairstylist and make millions.
Now come back to Siti, yes she did not excel academically but she use her other gifted talent to work hard to become successful. The moral of the story here is that your kid can study like mad in school, but not everybody are born equal and can get first grade. Some excel in academic others in arts. If they fail in academic, they have to recover and get back on their feet to discover their other strength and pursue it. History is filled with lessons where people did not accept failure and ultimately succeeded. Siti is one of the role model in this case. On the moral ground, take a look at artists within Siti age group, she is one of the role models for our young generation (our youngsters now are heavily influenced by the Hollywood culture). Siti has maintained a good morale value in her mannerism and positive attitude (she does not smoke, drink,or party etc). She has achieved her success and made millions at tender age of 27.
I am definitely amazed of how a person like "Anonymous 10:14 PM MYT" who I think has a high academic excellence can be shallow in their thinking on what constitute a role model.
