Excellent Advice From Her Majesty The Queen.

Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Fauziah Tengku Abdul Rashid Wednesday expressed hope that university students be given more freedom to think and explore the variety of knowledge.

She said restrictions of their freedom to think would only retard the creativity of the younger generation who would be the backbone of the country's knowledge development.

"Those with knowledge should be bold to think outside the box and should be firm when coming to terms with values of freedom and beneficial thinking for nation building," she said at the Universiti Sains Malaysia's (USM) 35th Convocation here Wednesday.

Tuanku Fauziah who is also the university Chancellor said she hoped the university could nurture the knowledge culture among its students and the surrounding community.

She said the university must also produce creative and innovative students who were capable of using their knowledge for the benefit of mankind.

"All these are critical to ensure the country can weather its future challenges," she said.

**** I must say that Her Majesty has voiced the opinion of many Malaysians, urging the government to set free the young intellectual mind and allow them the opportunity to be creative and innovative. I hope the authorities take into consideration the Royal advice and somehow deal with the academically stifling Universities and University Colleges Act, by either removing it totally and if that is not politically feasible, at least dilute the provisions.

Her Majesty has correctly opined that in the challenges the nation has to confront in the future, it is extremely essential that intelligensia are open, forward thinking and exposed to a knowledge culture in tune with the times.
