What a turn of fortune. A few years ago the Bangladeshis were collectively declared persona non grata by the government. From August 1st they will have the welcome mat laid out for them.
On the other hand illegal aliens still lurking in every nook and corner of the country will be given marching orders to leave or be thrown out. No half-hearted,weak-kneed amnesty like before. Just catch 'em and eject 'em strategy.
It has been reported that a major operation will be underway soon to rid the country of the estimated 500,000 illegal immigrants. Illegal immigrants would be rounded up and placed in detention centres before being repatriated while some would be sent back straight away. The police, immigration officers and more than 100,000 members of the People's Volunteer Corps (Rela) will be involved in the exercise.
The majority of aliens were working illegally in the construction and plantation sectors while some were running small businesses in the urban centres. Many of them had set up illegal squatter colonies in major towns and cities and an increasing number of them had committed crimes including serious ones.
Malaysia has repatriated 400,000 illegal immigrants, mostly Indonesians but an estimated 500,000 or more remain in the country.
Some 1.8 million foreigners are currently working legally in the various economic sectors including the construction and plantation industries in Malaysia.
