Good Advice For Datuk Tony Fernandes.

Law makers Wednesday hit out at AirAsia for vehemently opposing Malaysia Airlines' (MAS) decision to offer tickets at discounted price on its domestic routes through its "Supersaver" programme. "What's wrong for MAS to give discounted price to senior citizens, students and the disabled?," asked one MP. Good question and I think that Datuk Tony Fernandes should answer it.

Prudent, unfair or silly decision; that's not what the fare-paying public is interested in. For us the bottom-line is how much cheaper is the ticket going to be. If MAS comes out with large discounts we are happy. Just because Tony feels that the government move allowing MAS to scrap its floor price is unfair, should not in any way hinder the passenger's chance of flying at a lower cost.

It would be advisable for Datuk Fernandes in future to lobby in private for whatever he feels is not right in this or any other decision. He has an immense amount of goodwill among the thinking and rational public. However there are Malay 'nationalists' who are extremely unhappy that a non-Malay has succeeded where every single bumi involved in MAS has humiliatingly crashed. Apart from their natural feeling of dengki they are also probably waiting for him to fail and eat humble pie. Then they can gloat and have a good night's sleep.

The vehemence with which Malay MPs lashed out at Tony on this issue at Parliament is also a good gauge of what the lower echelon of Umno politicians feel about his involvement in the aviation industry. So don't push your luck, be less vocal in public, maintain a low profile and lobby hard in private.

As for the Malaysian public, bumi or non-bumi, we are proud of your achievements and thank you for making air travel affordable for the average Joe.

"free competition is always welcome by consumers . However in MAS case we have seen from record their losses. Who is going to bail out MAS in event the they start a price war and incur more losses?
