Build The London Sports Centre. To Hell With Public Opinion, Says Najib.

The government is going ahead with plans to build a sports training centre in London despite criticisms and scepticism but the cost has not been finalised, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak. He said there was a need for such a facility and objections to it could have been caused by reports that the centre would cost RM490 million to build. "The RM490 million figure is not confirmed. We have only budgeted a small sum for the first phase.

Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Azalina Othman Said announced on Monday that the Cabinet Committee on Sports chaired by Najib had approved the construction of a sports training centre on Malaysian government land in Brickendonburym, 24km from the proposed site of the 2012 London Olympics Village.

The Malaysian Rubber Board owns the land on which the Tun Abdul Razak Rubber Research Centre is sited. Najib said the training centre was part of the government's long-term plan to train 'high-calibre' Malaysian athletes expose them to a more competitive environment. "We want these athletes to compete with the best in order to build their capability to the highest level," he said.

The centre would allow them to get the necessary "warm-up" training before taking part in international competitions, he said. He said the Youth and Sports Ministry and the Ministry of Plantation Industries and Commodities would work out an appropriate arrangement to ensure rubber research(?) and the needs of sports would be accommodated at the facility.

So basically Najib is telling the public to "go fly a kite, we can't be bothered about what you think." They are definitely going ahead to splurge on this white elephant and frankly there's nothing much we can do. Only when things go awry will be allowed to vent our anger and after a couple of days of hand-wringing and teeth-gnashing it will be forgotten, just like the once much talked about tsunami.

So be prepared folks, for at some later date we the unsuspecting public will be made to indirectly pay for this and other foolish enterprises. Whether it will be in the form of higher taxes, increased utility rates or costlier essential commodities no one knows. But when it does bite, take consolation that by your suffering and sacrifice you are contributing to the rise of a world superpower in sports. Thanks a million Najib and beware China; Malaysia is coming!!

All of you are right. This is just another means of making money for Najib, Azalina and the rest. The bigger the cost the higher the commission and kick-backs. To hell with the tax-payers. After all over 90% of the seats in Parliament. We can do anything we like.
