World Cup - Enjoy, But Take Care.

The month-long World Cup offers a chance for victims of domestic violence to escape while their partners are distracted, but could lead to an overall rise in violence, a British charity said on Friday.
Refuge said victims would often try to leave the house while their partners were watching a game. "They use the hours of the match to get away," a spokeswoman said.
But the link between alcohol and violence meant the number of violent incidents between a couple could rise during the tournament.
It added that there was no research to suggest a link between domestic violence and watching soccer itself, which has often been suggested in the past.
Refuge provides emergency accommodation and safe houses for women and children who are subject to domestic violence.
The spokeswoman said they were not able to increase their resources during the June 9 to July 9 tournament as they were already stretched to the limit but added they were expecting an increase in inquiries.(The Sun)

**** While we in Malaysia take pride that football hooliganism including binge drinking is not part of our soccer-fan culture, a month long fiesta like the World Cup will take its toll on us for the simple reason that the matches will be on at unearthly hours for us. Absenteeism, exhaustion and sleep deprivation with all its attendant problems will surface and therefore some care and responsibility should be exercised by our soccer fans.

By all means enjoy yourselves and have a really, really good time. But please do realize when and where to draw the line for your sake as well as for your family, friends and your future.

But I hv also read somewhere that the World Cup might suffer a huge terrorist attack, maybe a pretext for uncle sam to zap at Iran. With 9/11 still unresolved, Iraq in quagmire, Bush low approval rating and the Nov elction looming, can't help it if I tend to sound like a conspiracy theorist.
Peace to Malaysians !

Well we won't have to wait long to find out would we? I hope nothing happens though. Let the beautiful game be played unimpeded.
