What Is The Meaning of 'Rift'?

According to the dictionary rift means, an interruption in friendly relations: alienation, breach, break, disaffection, estrangement. That's exactly what I thought too until I read this Bernama report on how in the wisdom of our foreign minister there is no rift between Dr. Mahathir and the PM!

Differences between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and his predecessor Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad have been under the limelight of the media over the past few days. However, a "rift" was not the word to describe their differences, at least that was what Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar feels. "I don't think there is any rift between Tun Mahathir and Datuk Seri Abdullah. Tun Mahathir is living in a very democratic country and is entitled to give his views.

Syed Hamid said all the politicians in the country recognised the fact that they did not have similar opinions at all times. "As such, let us live with our differences, but let us not do anything that can create disunity," he said.

**** I see, so what we have going on between these two giants of Malaysia is 'dissimilar opinions'! And all the while I thought something really serious was going on. Thanks foreign minister, at least I will have a worry free sleep tonight.

By the way while going through the dictionary I also came across another word.
Smother: To conceal, suppress, or hide: Eg. Management smothered the true facts of the case.
