The Perennial Mantra.

Nowhere in the world a multi-racial country like Malaysia where people of diverse origins and cultures live harmoniously and peacefully, MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting said Saturday. "It is also testimony of the common heritage, sense of cultural identity and love for peace," he said at the opening of the 9th Sakyadhita International Conference on Buddhist Women.

The international conference attended by some 500 delegates is being held to promote world peace through the creation of a communication network among Buddhists women worldwide. It is also held to promote gender equality in Buddhism, improve well-being of women in developing countries and to cultivate harmony and understanding among the Buddhist traditions and the world's religions.

"Foreign delegates will certainly find the co-existence of the multi-religion and multi-ethnic dimension of this country interesting."Let us remember that irrespective of our origin, race, culture and belief, we share the same home, a small, single planet on which we live together. "Let us take into our hearts and join our hands in bringing peace, harmony and non-violence to all people of the world," he added.-- BERNAMA

**** At a time when even the simple kongsi raya is being questioned by learned men of religion and there are quarters trying to stop the practice we have to ask ourselves what we have actually achieved and in what direction we are heading in. Its all very well to spout well meaning lines of comfort but let us not be fooled enough to ignore the realities on the ground and the great divide between the different ethnic groups in the country.
