Monitoring Projects Requires Honesty And Commitment.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has asked heads of state governments and elected representatives to monitor every project to ensure it creates the required impact for the people. He said the main priority was to ensure the project achieved the objective and purpose for which it was planned. This point was stressed in his meeting in Putrajaya last night with state Umno liaison heads who are also menteris besar.

Abdullah, who is Umno president, cited the example of a new school which would not have any beneficial impact for students if it was not supplied with furniture on time. "Even if the furniture is in but there are no teachers or no laboratory, the students will be unable to have their lessons. So, in terms of impact, the school will not benefit the people," he said.

To the elected representatives, he said they should keep an eye on projects in their areas and constantly assess their impact. However, he said, they should approach their responsibility with the intention to help correct any shortcomings instead of finding fault.

**** Firstly while I laud the PM's intention it is asking too much of our elected representatives especially the MBs and CMs to spend time monitoring projects for the people's benefit. Since when did most of them care about the people ahead of their own interests? Some of these so-called elected reps are leeches sucking dry whatever they can get hold of during their tenure. Also I find the PM's advice to them to correct shortcomings but not find fault an ambivalent call. If there is nothing in it for them they will either ignore it or find fault. Only if there is something to be gained will they talk loudly about the 'needs' of the people and how this or that project must proceed despite public objections because it is good for the public! Either way it is Mat Public who gets duped at the end of the 'monitoring'.

How nice it would be if the government for once trusts public interest groups and people-oriented organisations to do the monitoring work instead of polticians with agendas, local authority 'Napoleons' and assorted fortune seekers. I can guarantee that they will do a far better job than the present so-called monitors.
