Dr Khir To Relinquish MYC President Post On June 23

The saying 'heavy is the head that wears the crown' must have 'weighed' on his mind when Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo announced that he will step down as Malaysian Youth Council (MYC) president on June 23.

He said though he was eligible to defend the post, he had decided to bow out to pave the way for a leader aged below 40 to lead the movement. "According to provisions in the Societies Act, I can still contest to defend the post, but I am holding to the principle that the movement must be led by a leader aged below 40," said the 41-year-old Dr Khir. He has held the post since 2002.

"I want more youths should be given the responsibility to lead youth associations while the seniors should guide and help them." A combination of young and senior leaders can strengthen youth organisations," he said. Asked who would succeed him, Dr Khir hinted that his successor could be MYC deputy president Shamsul Anuar Nasarah. (Bernama)

**** At one time he was even tipped to be a future UMNO youth leader but one scandal after another has put paid to that ambition. Plus I suppose the real fear of challenging the heavyweights who matter. After all he was just another UMNO boy when Dr Mahathir 'parachuted' him onto the MB's chair over much more senior people. Although many were unhappy then, no one dared to open their mouth. Who did anyway during Mahathir's rule? Some of those 'bola'-less characters are the ones making the most noise now!

As a Mentri Besar and dentist he has left his mark in some areas; cavities in green hills, unnecessary extraction of the public's earlier goodwill, scaling down of transparency and of course that toothpaste ad smile when he says 'semuanya OK!"
