Qur'ān In Malaysian Hotel Rooms Soon

A copy of the Quran and its intepretation will be made available in most hotel rooms in the country to allow both Muslims and non-Muslims to have “access” to the Holy book.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the department had embarked on a pilot project recently where a copy of the Quran’s intepretation was placed in several five-star hotel rooms in the Klang Valley.

He said the move received positive response from guests and members of the Malaysian Association of Hotel Owners (MAHO) have asked the Islamic Development department (Jakim) if they too could be part of this project.

“This move is not only because of the high number of visitors and tourists from the Middle East, but also because there are people of other beliefs who are keen to know more about what is said in the Quran, just as they are interested to know more about the teachings of other religions.

“We are pleased that our effort is accepted positively by the public. Soon, one can expect to see a copy of the Quran in rooms of three-star hotels and above,” he told reporters Thursday after launching the latest Bahasa Malaysia-version of the interpretation of the Quran.

Ahmad Zahid said Jakim would be printing another 50,000 copies of the Quran’s interpretation for the purpose, costing some RM1.3mil, adding these books were in English to cater to foreign visitors and tourists. (The Star)

***** In the US, for more than a century the Gideon's Bible has been placed in hospitals, prisons, military bases, and schools as well as hotels. This particular Bible is now found in more than 180 countries and in over 80 languages. I suppose that some good must have come out of giving such easy access to a holy book. Therefore placing
a copy of the Quran in hotel rooms is on balance a good idea.

this is such a good idea.they have my full support on this.usually it's bible that are being placed in hotel rooms.so for Quran to be placed in hotel rooms hopefully gonna spark the intention and help those who wants to know about Quran and it's content.

but they should consider other things as well.like where to place the Quran if the bible are being placed in the same room.

i also have a suggestion.why not list down the all mosques and the imans that are available nearby so that people or tourist who have any question regarding the Quran can go to the nearest mosque or imam nearby to forward their question(s).

Gideon use their own money. How can the Malaysian Government use our (tax payer) money to promote Islam? Its an abuse of trust.

I have no objection to the Koran to be placed in hotel but the money must and should come from the Dakwah or Islamic group. The Malaysian Government should encourage these people to sponsor or do the necessary.

Non-Muslim and Non-Malay

I was going to say that in the west, the Gideons are responsible for putting bibles in hotel rooms but Anonymous got here before me. I also agree that taxpayers money should not be used for proselytising. Any rational person would agree that the government should not be involved in religious activities in this manner. They can encourage it but they certainly should not fund it. Unfortunately, sentiments in Malaysia are such that any opposition to this move would be construed as unIslamic.

I support the idea but the Quaran has to be of a prominent size to remind room occupants not to do hanky panking business in the room. I think they should extract that part on llicit sex and corruption, enlarged it and frame it on the wall.

i do not agree. it's blasphemous! i was conditioned to understand kafirs has got no business whatsever to do with islam or the quran. the religious authorities like jakim has never issued any statement to say otherwise. so i believe my conditioning remain valid. the latest episode as in penang whereby some wakil rakyat who profess to be muslims took the chief minister to task for quoting "quotes" of the caliphs proves my point. further more - we may not be sure if kafirs staying in the hotels may deface the holy quran. NO. NO. NO.

comon guys, r we living in the stone age? Why not use the TV channel to do the job? Hotels can show Bible, Koran, .... on TV and let room guests to select whatever they want. It's true that some non-muslims may like to know about things in the koran, similarly, muslims also like to know things in the bible. Furthermore, TV channel programme will save a lot more than printed books and it will not be torn or meshed up by mischievous guests.

Gideon uses their own funds to buy the bible and put them in the hotel. We don't mind if the government find some willing sponsors to do the same thing, as long as they do not use tax-payers money.
