Syariah Judge: Islam Defends Everybody. Non-Muslim Fears Unwarranted
Islam does not discriminate against any race or religion so non-Muslims do not have to fear if common law and syariah courts were to be merged as suggested by a former Chief Justice.
Syariah Court Judge and Syariah Judicial Department director-general Datuk Ibrahim Lembut said such fears among non-Muslims were unwarranted.
“Islam will defend everybody. The impression that merging the two court systems will override the rights of the non-Muslims is wrong,” he told reporters after attending the International Seminar on Comparative Law at Marriott Hotel here on Tuesday.
“However, we still have a long way to go before we can merge the two court systems although we have held talks on the possibility of harmonising civil and syariah laws,” he said.
He said Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail had also given his views on the matter during such talks.
Some civil lawyers who had attended these talks had refused to even consider harmonising the laws between the two systems, Ibrahim said when commenting on a statement by MCA legal bureau chairman Datuk Leong Tang Chong.
Leong had said that any merger would subject non-Muslims to syariah jurisdiction on all legal matters, including inter-faith cases relating to marriage and divorce.

My answer is: Not in Malaysia. Never. Because promises are always not kept. It's always a flip-flop policy.
Islam defends everybody. Yeah, like Napoleon the short buffalo proclaimed, " All animals are equal, but some are more equal than the others"
It's not the religion that I am afraid of. It's the over-zealous and self-righteous nuts of the so-called enforcers that we are fearful of.
Two things:
1. Einstein (supposedly) said this: "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results".
2. Pakistan
'Nuff said.
The question is : why should they merge ?
I concur with Sheriff view. It's always the law enforcers who mess up the law but not the law. But then again, why subject non-muslim to syariah practices? Is this not a plan to unify all races of different faiths? Who dare say he or she can warrant that there'll be justice for all? We have seen ridiculous sentences passed on muslim by syariah court, how secure will it be to non-muslim?
Under the present UMNO regime, Islam is only for Malay, they think Islam is created by UMNO only. So, it is only UMNO's doctrine the country will adopt, so, how safe can we be?
Thanks but NO THANKS.
Hei! A non-muslim can't even quote a popular Caliph (See Malaysia Today). There are some morons questioning that and here some jokers are planning to merge civil and syariah courts.
What a circus?
I'm from Sarawak. Long before Sarawak was forced by the British to form Malaysia, the majority were non-muslims. Never in the entire history of Sarawak's existence did the 3 white "Christian" Rajahs ever implemented any laws to force the minority muslims to accept civil or "Christian" law. In fact Sarawak has the earliest example of a codified Malay Adat .. the Muslim Wills Ordinance 1896(Cap 96) enacted under the white "Christian" Rajah long before Malaysia day.
But with the stroke of a pen on 16th September 1963 Sarawakians especially the majority non-muslims suddenly have to acept that we are suddenly a "muslim" country and today we are asked whether the justice system should be "merged" with Islamic law. This is justice -do unto us what we never do unto you. Since then KL NEVER consults with Sarawak and Sabah on such "NATIONAL" questions. Why? because for many people in the peninsular the nation "Malaysia" means the peninsular with some miscellaneous territories (but comprising 2/3 rds of total Malaysian territory) on the island of Borneo. Today we have to lie down and accept that once in awhile a fresh and over zealous home ministry official will go and confiscate Iban and other native bibles because they contain the name "Allah" (as has happend a few times before) translations of which were made made LONG BEFORE Sarawak formed "Malaysia" and even longer still among Christian Arabs, without ever even consulting with, at the very least BN leaders) leaders of Sabah and Sarawak. Don't these people realise we Christians cannot simply change the name of God in the Bible just because it does not fit some the religious opinion of some over zealous minor home ministry official?!!! If that's His name, then that's His name. We Christians are NOT ENTITLED to change His name either!! Are we to re-write bibles and call Him "Jack" instead? We in East Malaysia are irrelevant since 1963 except for purposes of extracting 95% of the oil & gas under us used to build the Petronas Towers, F1 and prop up the WHOLE NATION during the various recessions through Petronas. (If Petronas can get annoyed at having to bail out the Federal government often ask your self where do the bulk of the oil & gas comes from?!! Negri Sembilan perhaps?) The CONSTITUTION, in which virtually no Sabahan or Sarawakian was ever involved in the drafting is already supposed to provide legal protection and freedon of religion. Yet so many cases show other wise. In fact, it already gives more than adequate protection to Muslims! ... yet if this (so called non-islamic) constitution is still not enough to guarantee freedom of religion, is Syariah law is supposed to be able to do better!!! No wonder many Sarawakians openly resent the British for pushing us to form Malaysia. We pity our Sabah brothers & sisters even more. Sabah like Sarawak, contribute the bulk of Oil & gas revenue, have among the smallest population but among the greatest proportion of poverty despite oil under their feet! But they are very rich in illegal immigrants! All these issues would be non-issues if we were on our own. Its not even an issue in Indonesia the most populous Muslim nation in ASEAN!. The rest of the world is planning and trying to put together a manned mission to Mars and some West Malaysian people still cannot figure out what freedom of religion in the Constitution means! We in sabah & Sarawak never had such problems among the races here but because its a "problem" in semenanjung (which comprises only 1/3of the Malaysian territory) therefore it's a "National" problem. Then we in Sabah & Sarawak must be in another country and might as well be.
