Government Fishing For Malay Votes; Warns Christian Weekly For Allegedly 'Denigrating' Islam.

The government of the predominantly Muslim country of Malaysia has accused The Herald, a Christian weekly newspaper, of violating publication rules by running articles considered political and insulting to Islam.

The Malaysian Home Ministry sent a letter to the Herald’s publisher warning that its June editions had “committed offenses” by highlighting the country’s politics instead of discussing the Christian issues for which it has been licensed. The letter charged the Herald with carrying an article that it said “could threaten public peace and national security” because it allegedly “denigrated Islamic teachings,” the Associated Press reports.

Like all media outlets in the country The Herald, which is the Catholic Church’s main publication in Malaysia, is required to obtain government licenses which must be renewed annually.

Father Lawrence Andrew, editor of the Herald, denied the allegations.

“We comment on issues. The Pope comments on issues,” he told the Associated Press, saying it is normal for the newspaper to have an “ethical interpretation” of current events and politics. I don't think we were in any way going against the type of content we have chosen,” he continued.

Father Andrew said one of the articles in question, titled “America and Jihad: Where do they stand?” was an analysis of circumstances surrounding the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States and had not mocked Islam.

The Home Ministry’s letter warned it “would not hesitate to take sterner action” if the Herald repeats its alleged offenses. One ministry official told the AP that the paper must satisfactorily explain why it ran the articles and must adhere to the rules, or the ministry will suspend its publication.

A representative from the Catholic Asian News, another Malaysian publication, said it also recently received a letter from the ministry warning about its coverage of political issues.

For the past year the Herald has been in a court dispute with the government over its use of the word “Allah” as a Malay translation for the word “God.” The government has argued the usage would confuse Muslims while the newspaper insists it uses the word “Allah” as it has been used for centuries in the Malay language. ***** It looks like the government has totally abandoned any pretense of representing and caring for every single citizen. For the sake of its survival, our unpopular kerajaan led by Umno has decided to compete with PAS and go all out for the halal vote. And what better and effective way than to promote and burnish its image as the saviour of all things Islam? Never mind the wholesale corruption and other devious deeds committed without care or conscience. Never mind that 'anti-Islamic crises' have to be created. Humbugs.

If government is fishing for malay votes, I guess Opposition is fishing for non-malay votes then, which then could worsen the racial harmony and unity day by day. I guess it was opposition's purpose to make this happen so that chinese and indians pay attentions to them rather to BN? How cunning they are. Risking actions by doing that could end up like 13 May. Are they out of their mind?

Anonymous,
As usual bloody umno is using religion and racial issues to threaten and intimidate the people. In the pretext of calling it denigrating Islam umno again hope to gain political votes from the Malays.
In the coming By-election in Permatang Pauh all voters should show their hatred for umno by voting for Anwar. The only way to shut umno up and stop them from threatening people is to get them out of Parliament. Umno has always used Islam as the spearhead, it is time that people show umno that it does not work anymore. The greatest triumph for the citizens of Malaysia regardless of race or religion is to vote for Anwar and show Badawi and Najib they no longer carry any respect, the three stooges (Bodowi, C4 bomber and Shit Hamid) are nothing but umno clowns whose act is not funny anymore.
Shit On UMNO

youth concern, u may have a point... It is "easier" to gain non malay votes now instead of malay votes. so u may see no that the PR leaders are all quite scrambling to get the non malays' attentions. Strategy? I think the permatang pauh election have evrything to do with it.

Hindraf threatens the stability in Malaysia. The christians invade other countries and try to propagate christianity. Umno does not get people to embrace Islam . Christian missionaries do.
