Toll Increase, If Any, Won't Burden The People, Says A Caring, Benevolent Samy Vellu

The government has given an assurance that any highway toll rate increase will not burden the people.

Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said the ministry was currently studying all proposals before the matter was brought to the Cabinet for a final decision.

"As the minister in charge, it's wrong for me not to conduct the study (on toll charges) but I'll make sure that the well-being of the people will be taken into consideration," he said after attending the launch of a project to upgrade Jalan Jeli-Jelawang-Gua Musang here yesterday.

Several parties such as the Malaysian Trades Union Congress and the Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations have urged the government not to increase the toll rates for eight highways next year.

Samy Vellu said that at the same time, the government had to be responsible for the agreements inked with highway concessionaires allowing toll rates to be reviewed after a certain period of time. "What we want to achieve is a win-win situation whereby the people won't feel the pinch while the concessionaires will be a satisfied lot," he said.

Samy Vellu also said the findings of the study on the proposed toll rate increase would be submitted to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi after Aidilfitri. "We don't want to disturb anybody during this fasting month. All we care about is how to lessen the burden of the people," he said.

The ministry is allocating RM70 million for the road upgrading exercise which will take two years to complete. (Bernama)

***** This was not the tune which Samy was singing last week when he arrogantly announced impending toll hikes. But after Najib shot it down, Samy apparently has had a change of heart and is now talking more about lessening the people's burden! What bullshit.

Few persons have done more damage to the average man's wallet than Samy Vellu, with his unbending support and great love for toll concessionaires. But do you think the government will consider replacing him? No way mate. You see Samy Vellu knows more about the underhand deals involving umnoputeras in the toll agreements and many PWD contracts than do most senior Umno leaders themselves. If he gets pissed off and starts singing it will lead to scandalous revelations which the political leadership can scarce afford.

For the time being we have some respite but after the next general elections and when we least expect it, you can be sure that he'll sock it to us with a huge increase in toll charges. Let's wait and see.

win-win situation? for who? for the toll concessionaires?
if the toll is not raised this year, it will be next anyway. meantime, government has to compensate and the money comes from the annual budget. either way, the people are damned anyway.
am i surprise now why you never honour your promise to reveal the concessionaire agreeemnt. put it this way, samy go on and lie to your constituents in sungei siput. they may be dumb enough to listen to your nonsense. but there are plentiful who knows that you lie.
remember there's karma.

This old man always say something let us feel very funny, don't be so angry . Our government always like that before election and after election are two different face. Before election everything is ok, but after election, what you say is nothing.

I am very poor in math, to be honest. But I think I know 1 + 1 can not be 1. So, if any toll increase, say 1 sen + the present rate, doI still get the present rate? No burden?? I just can't get it. I think I need to go back to playschool.

More vehicles on the highways. The number has multiplied by many folds. The same very vehicles are making increased journeys to cope with the current needs to move and travel for various reasons.
Imagine in the next 20 to 30 years what will the increase in toll rates can actually be?
I am a senior citizen with no income. Where to get that kind of money. Toll operators can come up with legitimate justifications to seek increase in toll charges. Government at the end cant do anything constructive to deny thier demands as there are clear provisions allowing the operators' need to have an increase... it's absolutely legal!. I wonder how and why did the government allow a loose ( if not one sided ) contract favouring the conssessioneirs to be agreed upon. Can we imagine the burden that can likely befall on our future generations. From KL to Bkt Kayu Hitam can cause a whoping RM 200 to 300. This does not make sense to the public.I feel the group of people involved in the contract negotiations, agreements, endorsements and finally giving consent and blessing must be benefiting out of the entire deal.
We must start looking and requesting
the government to slash down on a number of taxes to take the heavy load of essential expenses from the citizen away as a sense of assisting them lower thier loads.
Look at car for instance our tax is exceedingly high.Soon fuel cost will increase, toll rates get futher higher, repair and maintainance cost get higher. Even people with substancial income could not withstand this pressure. Indeed this will be seriously burdensome on people without steady income. As a result there will be a great number of people suffering from stress and depression.
We need to see some good people in stretegic places to lead the country.
