First Malaysian In Space A Cosmonaut, Says Jarjis

Malaysia's first "angkasawan" (space traveller) will be recognised as a cosmonaut by the Russian space authorities, said Science, Techology and Innovations Minister Datuk Seri Jamaludin Jarjis.

He said that an official recognition ceremony for the angkasawan as a cosmonaut would be held in Moscow on Nov 11 following his return from space on Oct 21.

"Some countries might question this, but to me, it is not important. What matters is that the candidate was selected and trained by Russia and the country recognises him as a true cosmonaut," he told reporters after breaking fast with members of the media here tonight.

He was commenting on the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) referring to Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Sheikh Mustapha, one of two Malaysians eligible to make an expedition to the International Space Station (ISS) on a Russian Soyuz rocket on Oct 10, as "space flight participant" on its website.

The term given by NASA to the Malaysian angkasawan had made many Malaysians unhappy as Malaysia had put in a lot of effort to send its first man into space. "The Russians themselves had told our man (angkasawan) that he is a cosmonaut, and that's the end of the story," he said.

Jamaludin said it was the Russians who had selected and will be sending the Malaysian angkasawan to space and therefore it is appropriate for them to give the recognition and not the United States.

He also said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak will witness the launch of the space expedition in Kuala Lumpur on Oct 10 at 9.30pm.

There will also be teleconferencing between the leaders with the Malaysian angkasawan while he is stationed aboard the ISS.

Jamaludin said the spacecraft carrying the Malaysian angkasawan and two other astronauts accompanying him will land in Siberia not far from the launch pad in Baikonour, Kazakhstan on Oct 21 at 6.30pm Malaysian time. A helicopter will pick them up and take them to an airport where they will be flown to Moscow, he said.

Najib is scheduled to receive the Malaysian Angkasawan there. Jamaludin said the angkasawan would have to undergo health observation for a week before being allowed to return home and that a grand welcome would be organised for him.

He added that he had written to all State Islamic departments and menteris besar and chief minister to hold special prayers on Friday for the angkasawan.
He hoped all Malaysians would join in and pray for the angkasawan's safe expedition. (Bernama)

***** In the past, spacemen of different countries, including India and Vietnam, trained in Russia and launched in Russian craft were always referred to as cosmonauts. Our man is no different and deserves the same recognition and respect accorded to others.

There is no reason to doubt his credentials or his ability. The route through which he got into the space programme may be controversial, i.e. the defence purchase trade-off and the rumoured kickbacks to well connected and influential politicians and their cronies. But that has nothing to do with our man in space and he should not be blamed or belittled because of this. There seems to be a tendency among commenters in this and other blogs to be insulting and scornful of the angkasawan. This more than anything else seems to be a case of sour grapes. So much so one gets the impression that if the cosmonaut had been a Chinese or an Indian there would not have been so many negative observations.

The one thing which puts me off though, is the hype by the Umno leadership. Najib will try to get into the space limelight hoping that it will deflect attention from the irregularities of the defence purchase, while Jarjis will squeeze every bit of publicity for himself and the other umnoputeras. Already Jarjis is using the agama angle by asking
State Islamic departments to conduct prayers! As the launch date nears you can be sure that the bangsa, agama dan negara refrain will be heard loudly ad nauseam, while the Umno warlords go to town with the perjuangan parti crap and the optimistic "tak kan Melayu hilang di dunia" slogan. What an effective way to amass some pre-election pahala!

takkan melayu hiland di dunia reminds me of the sajak adi putra recited during one of anwar;s campaign i watched in YouTube. lol...i never thought of jarjis trying to publicise himself as much as he can for election. then again, when do i ever give a damn about what he says at all. haha...:)

The facts: This Malaysian going into space is a paying space tourist, nothing more, nothing less. (the long suffering tax payers are funding his useless vacation)
The fiction:
All the rest, the other stuff is a fantasy and is pure unadulterated bullshit.
Does Jackass Jarjis think he is talking to fools.

Since the Malaysian idiot is considered a cosmonaut, why don't the flight commander and the rest of the crew let him pilot the spacecraft? Instead of reaching the ISS, it might end up on Mars or even Pluto. Then the first man to land on Pluto would be a Malaysian!!!

On second thoughts, under the skillful hands of the great Malaysian cosmonaut, the spacecraft might not even get off the ground on takeoff. It might even veer off course and land on the PM's house in Kepala Batas...

The Russians themselves had told our man that he is a cosmonaut--- JJ need to pay a few more millions to the Russians and they will say he is the Spaceflight Supreme Lord Commander. And our PM the Honorary Iman of the Baikonour Space Center.

Talk about the Russians having great PR! They need to 'cari makan' as well. And what better than buttering up UMNO. After all, the Malays absolutely loved to be exalted. Melayu Boleh!

For once, The Malaysian, allow me to disagree with you. Astronaut or Cosmonaut, makes no difference to me as far as our fella is concerned. He, to me, is still nothing more than a Space Tourist, period. In fact, I don't even feel sour graped at all. Even if it had been a Chinese, Indian, Eurasian, Kadazan or a Dusun, and if he got into the programme the same way our fella got in, I will still call him a Space Tourist. Come on, let's call a spade a spade. Do I feel excited about the event, naaah! This is nothing more than another UMNO propoganda.

No, many Malaysian are UNHAPPY because you squander our tax payer's money to send a space tourist into orbit.

The Malaysian, I'm not sour grape at all for this incident. The money could be otherwise well spent. We got nothing in this exercise except some self ego only. The whole thing made us look stupid & a laughing stock to the world. Other rich country like Japan, Taiwan, South Korea & Singapore etc. could have easily achieve this.

We don't have the technology & technical knowhow to even send a satelite into orbit. What's there to be proud of?? Whether it's Angkasawan, Space tourist, CanOrnot, Space steward, Space model, Space flight participant etc.. It doesn't matter at all.

I've to agree with anonymous 10.35am. Just like the recent lukewarm Merdeka celebrations, this space tourist is but an UMNO PR show.

It will be UMNOs 15 minutes of fame, before it's forgotten just like those mat rempit jumping at the north pole. Who'll give them a rat shit now?
It's the taxpayer money down UMNOs drain!

Vote BN OUT!!!

DR SHEIK : itulah Dataran Putrajaya !! Sambil menyentuh rambutnya dengan semangat membara.
PEGGY WINSTON : Whats the small little spots down there ?
DR SHEIK : Oh that’s the BAR COUNCIL protesting about our Malaysian Judiciary. Dalam hatinya DR SHEIK berkata itu Mat Salleh belum pernah lihat ular besar berak.
PEGGY WINSTON : Saya berasa penat hendak minum

Angkasawan Part 2

ET Menangkap semua crew 16 kakitangan KE PLANET ZION.

ET > Why you want 7 % discount ?
Dr Sheik : Sebab saya bumiputra
ET > Sini bukan BUMI, sini ZION, hanya ZIONPUTRA sahaja boleh beli DENGAN DISCOUNT SPECIAL.
Dr Sheik : Thats not Fair
ET > Who cares ?
Tiba - tiba, Dr Lee berkata :-
Dr Lee : Saya mahu beli, beli malaysia no discount, happy valley so expensive, Malaysia also i got non bumi price.
I buy HERE buy malaysia, anywhere also same lah
SAYA PALING UNTUNG !!!

The moral of the story of Angkasawan is beause EVEN YOU ARE OPPRESSED,
YOU LEARN THAT good life can only by hard and honest work. You will find life hard outside the world if you depend on the Government spoonfeed. LIFE IS EASY IF YOU WORK HARD AND HONEST YOU HAVE NO FEAR.

Moral cerita ini ialah sekiranya kita bekerja keras, kita boleh menghadapi seluruh dunia dengan kemampuan kita. Sekiranya kita mengharapkan bantuan kerajaan, kita akan berasa susah di negara lain.

THE END

anon 10:35 u are spot on. if the handsome doc aka part time model (cringe!) is a true astronaut:
1.why should Negara Ku have to pay billions indirectly?
2. he'd only be in space 10 days while d rest of the crew'll stay till 'next spring'. Come on, stay longer lah unless u are so important.
3. Astronauts train all their careerlife and 99.9999% do not shoot off to space. Ours train one year and its a big deal. So shy lah.

Why you all have to be so narrow minded. NASA pick up a teacher to be an astronaut back in the 80's. All you haters got nothing better to do, and critisize about your own damn Malaysian 1st astronaut. we are a developing country, so we need small steps to move forward and it will take some money out of the pocket to do so. Just think about it. and for anonymous 2.04PM that suggested him to pilot spacecraft, i think that ur an idiot, wat kind of idiot would let a "Rookie Astronaut" to pilot the rocket, of course they're gonna let the experience astronaut do it, u think they let Yuri Malenchenko to pilot the rocket on his first mission?? no!! so...for all u haters out there about this space program, ur a disgrace to ur own country.

1:13 AM GMT+8
Anonymous Anonymous said...

correction!!!! the dude's a SPACE FLIGHT PARTICIPANT and not a rookie astronaut or cosmonaut!!!! let's not stray away from the reality of the matter here.....

incidentally, can you just imagine the kinda product endorsements he'll be able to garner upon his return!!!! if u think mawi did good, the due will probably get 10x more the attention......

Its too late to argue bout the 1st malaysian tourist in space now. He is already in the space n the US$1 billion deal has been worked out between KL and Moscow. My question is would our tourist be given Dato ship after he comes back from space or before he even lands on earth.

Personally, it doesn't matter if he is an astronaut, cosmonaut or space tourist. Everyone going to space is in a way a space tourist, its just a matter of who pays for it. He is in space and having the time of his life.

Is he the best candidate? Orthpaedic surgent, part time lecturer, Mercy Malaysia volunteer, businessman, gone through a year of Russian training and the small thing of part time model. If that's not good enough, I don't know what is.

Is it worth the tax payers money?
I think so. Its an investment for the future plus we got on sale along with a couple of jet fighters. Do you think the kids talking on the Radio with Dr Sheikh are inspired? I think so and hopefully most of them will use this for inspiration. Millions of kids out there wanted to be an astronaut and they ended up being engineers, doctors, pilots .... better then being rempits.

only lowly cretins would resort to name calling.

Its the govermnent's decision to send him to space and he has been working very hard to be able to do the task intended. At least he has done something unlike namecallers who hide behind false names and whine non-stop about how stupid Malaysia is. Stop barking at the wrong tree.
They are buying the Sukhois anyway whether or not there's a cosmonaut programme.
