First Pigs, Now Dogs! We're Going Down The Halal Path Alright

A Malaysian town won't let sleeping dogs lie on its streets anymore.

Officials launched a competition earlier this week offering cash and other prizes to people who catch stray dogs in the town of Selayang in central Selangor state, but animal welfare activists say the town council is barking up the wrong tree.

"We find it so distasteful. It makes (dog-catching) into a very fun thing, like fox-hunting," Christine Chin, head of the Selangor chapter of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said Thursday. The plan could backfire because people might hurt the dogs or be bitten while trying to catch them, Chin said.

Razif Zainol Abidin, an official of the Selayang Municipal Council, defended the program, in which the council pays 20 ringgit for each dog that is delivered alive by people to their local community associations. "We have received a lot of complaints regarding stray dogs," he said. "The amount of stray dogs is increasing."

The council will also spend a total of 39,000 ringgit to build playgrounds or other projects for the three community associations that catch the most dogs, with a minimum of 150 dogs each within six months, Razif said.

So far, no dogs have been caught through the competition, Razif added.

Chin said there were more effective ways to curb strays, including sterilizing dogs and punishing owners who abandon animals.

Animal rights activists have long accused city councils of endorsing cruelty to dogs, especially by catching strays using violent tactics that injure or kill the dogs.

Malaysia, a mostly Muslim country, has strict laws on dog ownership. Dogs are considered unclean in Islam, and most owners are from the minority ethnic Chinese and Indian communities. (International Herald Tribune)

Malaysians have the dirty habit of letting dogs loose to do business anyplace and anywhere the mongrels please, so long as it’s not within their own compounds or at the front of their houses. Ditto for cat owners. The Selayang town council should extend the incentives to include the rounding up of stray cats, then maybe people will not look at it through religious or racial lenses

Please read Syed Akbar Ali's

Malaysia & the Club of Doom: The Collapse of The Islamic Countries.
Chapter 7:The Hatred of Dogs & House Lizards.

"There are no verses in the Quran which say that dogs are najis or filthy.Instead the Quran says that God has taught humans to train dogs to catch food for them which is halal."

"But different Muslims & different Islamic countries treat dogs differently. Turkish Muslims do not seem to have as much problems with dogs. The Turks even have their own breed of dogs of which they are very proud like the Kangal and the Tazi. These dogs were also bred during the time of the Khalifah Al Uthmaniyah."

Enlightening...

That Muslims regard dogs as unclean is probably a hangup from the old days in the middle east when there were so many lepers around and dogs used to feed on corpses of lepers.

Upper class malays have no problems with dogs. It is only those from rural backgrounds who gain their religious knowledge from the Pak Imam who worry about it. As for pigs, read the 'Malaysia Today" website for details which Malay Muslims own the biggest bits of land leased to (Chinese) pig farmers.

My objection is the crass mentality of those getting riled up by the presence of dogs or pigs or any other animals. These animals have the right to be on this earth as you or I. Surely a more humane approach where such animals have gone feral might more in keeping with 21st century beliefs. But I guess you have to get them (the people, not the animals) into the 21st century first.

Don't try any provokasi here, what has catching stray dogs got to do with halal path?

dan lagi jangan cuba nak ambil contoh dari golongan artis dan melayu liberal yang boleh "tidur" sama anjing.Arak pun mereka minum macam air sejuk.

Kalau belajar islam dari Syed Akbar Ali memang sesat lah jadinya.

Tak pernah dengar pun stray cat yang serang orang sampai parah.tapi anjing liar jangan main2,anjing ada lesen pun boleh bunuh orang apa lagi anjing liar.

Kpd. anonymous 1.15pm,

1. Komen mana yang sdr rasa terhasut?

2. Mana pula komen yang sebut artis atau melayu liberal? Sdr sendiri yang tokok tambah bab arak pulak!

3. Sudah ke sdr membaca buku Syed Akbar Ali yang pertama bertajuk:"To Digress A Little" ataupun buku terbarunya yang dilancarkan oleh Tun Mahathir bertajuk:"Malaysia & The Club of Doom:The Collapse of the Islamic Countries"? Kalau belum; bacalah dulu baru komen.

Kalau adapun cuma pingat pertandingan kucing!

just take away the stray dogs and for dog lovers, take good care of your dogs. If there are no cases of getting attacked by a dog, no problems raised.
