Malacca Authorities Abandon Pig Cull And Deny Racial Tension

Malaysia has called off a cull of 50,000 pigs amid concerns it could stoke racial tensions between Chinese pig farmers and their Muslim neighbours.

Authorities in southern Malacca state abandoned the cull on Tuesday night after dozens of farmers formed a human barricade around their farms. Riot police were called in to keep them at bay.

Officials had said they ordered the cull following complaints from residents about the smell and water pollution from the pig farms.

The government denied on Wednesday the cull had been called off because of fears of racial tensions and said farmers had now agreed to reduce their herds. But an opposition party said the racial dimension had forced authorities to back down. "People, their children and women came out, willing to defend their property, the government felt the backlash would be too great," said Lim Guan Eng, secretary-general of Malaysia’s main opposition Democratic Action Party.

He said the ruling coalition, dominated by Muslim ethnic Malays, had planned the cull for religious and political reasons. "It was done for political reasons to show that they are good Muslims and are fighting for Malay rights," Lim said.

Ethnic Chinese in multi-racial Malaysia relish pork, but the meat is banned in Islam as unfit for Muslim consumption.

Malacca’s chief minister has said the state did not want to emerge as Malaysia’s biggest pig producer and the national government wants Malaysia to become a global hub for halal food.

Farmers said their pigs were healthy and did not cause any pollution.

A veterinary department official said the situation needed cooling down but denied it was a racial issue. "They are trying to cool down the situation and negotiating with people how to implement this agreement to reduce pigs," the official said.

Under the pact, farmers agreed to cut the swine population from around 160,000 to 48,000 by September 21, an official of the Federation of Livestock Farmers’ Associations of Malaysia said. "They will either sell the pigs or relocate them to farms in other states," said the official, who declined to be named. "It is not fair, it will lead to panic selling."

***** It looks like doling out 90 datukships may not be enough for Malacca CM Ali Rustam to be reelected as Umno Vice President this time around. So what does he do? The same damned thing that political snakes like him have been doing for the past 50 years - suddenly start beating the agama dan bangsa drum, while posing as a champion of race, protector of Islam and a warrior for ketuanan Melayu. It's indeed a modern day tragedy that there are enough gullible people who actually believe the sandiwara of these political opportunists and greed merchants. Malaysia Boleh!

Dear Malaysian
The latest news is that thousands of pigs have been culled in an operation that started yesterday morning, according to the Sun newspaper.
It looks like the authorities don't give a damn about inciting racial tension.

If the pig farmers were indeed polluting the rivers, YES they're in the wrong.
If news of the cullings were true, the authorities are also wrong in the way they handled the situation.

Two wrongs doesn't make a right.

At the end of the day what is certain, is that this incident will sound the death kell for MCA in the coming election.

Politicians earning brownie points, wee little piggies get caught in between.

What a shame!

This pig-farming problems had been around for donkey years since the Malacca state government introduced the control of pig-farming industry (within the state) since 1982. In 1992, there were discussions within MCA to tackle the problem nationwide following the proposed new agricultural policy affecting the entire pig-farming industry. Hence the new concept then, called the "PFA" in short (Pig-Farming Area) was discussed and wanting to be implemented particularly control areas to resolve environmental pollution caused by pig-wastes. But the concept and later, implementation faced numerous problems such as state government failure to grant new locational land. In Malacca case, Paya Mengkuang constitutes 88.0 per cent of pig-farming within the state, with the land's proximity facing the sea-front prompted the state government's urgency to "eventually phase out" the pig-farming industry in Malacca. The state government also claimed the scarcity of land as another excuse to take such drastic steps.

It has been more than 10 years that this problem has been hanging around, and in this specific case in Malacca. It shows the insincerity of the UMNO leadership despite all the so-called feasibility studies and past BN leaders making overseas tour study trips (on pig-farming techniques in environmental protection)that eventually came to nought except wasting tax-payers money.

The leadership baton of the Malacca Chief Minister had since changed hands and the low profile stance it adopted in the past was shrouded in secrecy on this matter. All these factors steamrolled into the current tense situation.

All the state governments were supposed to be directed to identify land for PFA implementation since 1992. How much progress has been made since then? It is only a matter of time this drastic action will spread to other states, at the mercy of the UMNO leadership, of course. Like all problems, it is always "fire-fighting" approach but unlike natural disasters, this problem is caused by politicians calling the shots.
