While We Mull Over Ethics And Politics, Singapore Leapfrogs In Stem Cell Research
Stem cell scientist, Dr Alan Colman, a member of the team that cloned "Dolly, the Sheep" has joined Singapore's Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*Star) to head the island-state's stem cell research efforts, reports Bernama.
A*Star said Dr Colman has been appointed executive director of the Singapore Stem Cell Consortium and Principal Investigator at the Institute of Medical Biology with effect from July 1.
The consortium was established in October 2005 as the main coordinating body of stem cell research in Singapore to develop competitive research programmes and to bring basic and clinical stem cell research communities together.
He is currently the chief executive officer of ES Cell International, a provider of products and technologies derived from human embryonic stem cells. He had also worked for 14 years as the research director of PPL Therapeutics in Edinburgh, United Kingdom.
Dr Colman's most recognised contribution is working with the Edinburgh-based Roslin Institute to clone "Dolly, the Sheep". Commenting on his appointment, Dr Colman said he was delighted to take up the new position.
"(It) will allow me to participate at ground level in A*Star's ambitious plans to foster world-class stem cell research in Singapore and translate this research into clinical advances that help sick people," he said.
Dr Beh Swan Gin, Executive Director of A*Star's Biomedical Research Council, said: "Dr Colman's appointment as full-time executive director of the Singapore Stem Cell Consortium would significantly strengthen our stem cell research capabilities.
"This is expected to accelerate development of key stem cell research initiatives under the consortium".
He said Dr Colman's international reputation in stem cell and developmental biology and his experience in PPL Therapeutics and ES Cell International would be invaluable in advancing Singapore's stem cell research and its application to industry and the medical community.
***** As we wait for either a miracle, divine inspiration, Ulama approval, sudden surge of political will or the emergence from hibernation of the thus far peacefully snoring native wisdom, the Singaporeans will as usual move streets ahead in cutting-edge technologies as in everything else of importance. And we can spend the next few decades cursing them while at the same time being obsessively jealous of their achievements and trying to find all sorts of reasons to explain away our hopelessness. Sadly, our claims to super feats and attainments is limited to only bland slogans like "Malaysia Boleh!"

How can a prime minister who graduated with a degree in islamic history be interested in stem cell research? To him and his kind, even Darwin's Theory of Evolution is blasphemy! To him, the astronaut sent to space is not to conduct zero-gravity experiments, but to play with stones and drink teh tarik. Science is meaningless to the sleepy buffoon
No, no, no.
We have beaten Singaporean by conquering Everest before them and we continue sending Everest teams after that.
We have Malaysians parachuting in South (or North??) pole, Malaysian female crossing it too! We have Malaysian swimming across the Malacca strait & English Channel.
We are going to send a Malaynaut to Space soon!
We have beaten Singaporean!
Keep Dreaminggggggg.
The vast amount of money saved by Singapore by NOT participating in such nonsensical events stated above is plowed into developing the country. That's how it is now a first world developed nation
Even an "island" (not a country as an idiot claimed) can achieve so much, what happens if Singapore "is" a country....ha, ha! And yet, this Malaysia is a "country" and achieve frivolous achievements. So it's definitely not the fault of this "country", but the type of "rotten leadership" we have. A rotten tree to match with a bunch of good-for-nothing monkeys with banana brains.
