High Court Strikes Out Anwar Ibrahim's Defamation Suit Against Dr M

From TheStar update:

The Kuala Lumpur High Court today struck off Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's RM100mil defamation suit against Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Anwar filed the defamation suit against the former prime minister on Jan 27 last year over his statement about Anwar’s sodomy charges.

Anwar, who has since been cleared of the charges by the Federal Court, claimed that Dr Mahathir had uttered the defamatory statements during a press conference at the Human Rights Commission premises on 9 Sept 2005.

Apart from general damages, Anwar sought exemplary damages as well as an injunction to stop Dr Mahathir from repeating the defamatory statements.

Dr Mahathir pleaded defence of qualified privilege. He said he made the statement in the public’s interest.
