Are We An Islamic State Or Not? Najib Says "Yes" But MCA Says "No"!
In a telling dichotomy of views between the senior most partners in the ruling BN coalition, the issue of whether Malaysia is an Islamic state took a disputatious and potentially messy turn when the MCA openly contradicted the legally untenable opinion voiced by the Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
To those Malays and Muslims who are not well versed with legal provisions in the Federal Constitution, such a declaration by Najib is welcome news. In their heart of hearts this is probably what they had always thought and the DPM's contention is merely a confirmation.
To the non-Muslims however, this Najib 'declaration' is more proof of the rocky road ahead for them as Umno attempts to stay in tandem with genuine Islamic states while (thankfully) still holding on tight to the 'moderate' tag. Over the past few days much has been written about Najib's views on the subject, so let us focus here on what the MCA has to say.
According to an NST report, the MCA, after reviewing the documents used in the process of drafting the Federal Constitution, insisted that Malaysia is a secular state. "The documents showed that a secular state is the foundation of the formation of Malaya and this consensus was made by our forefathers," the party’s secretary-general, Datuk Ong Ka Chuan said. The position was clear as evidenced by numerous historical documents, including the Reid Report, the Cobbold Commission and a 1988 Supreme Court decision.
Ong added that the issue of Malaya as a secular state was vigorously debated again during the 1962 Cobbold Commission before the entry of Sabah and Sarawak, forming Malaysia. "Again, the secular nature of Malaysia was reiterated as having been stated in the Reid Commission. The secular nature of our Federal Constitution has been the basis for our nation building since 1957 and reinforced in 1963."
Meanwhile The Bar Council said that in the context of the country’s history and the constitution itself that proclaimed its supremacy, there was no doubt whatsoever that Malaysia was a secular state. "It is time that the proposition that Malaysia is not secular (which is a rewriting of the constitution), be put to rest once and for all and that there is due recognition and reaffirmation of the clear legal and constitutional position that Malaysia is, and has always been, a secular state."
***** Setting legalese aside, what prompted Najib to so unequivocally make that statement? Do you really think that he believes what he said or even subscribes to that view? Unlikely. He is merely acting the role expected of an Umno pemimpin who has appropriated to himself the 'noble' task of 'struggling' demi bangsa, agama dan negara, nothing else. The opinion which he expressed has been noted, much to the delight of his target audience, the simple Malay voter. That's enough for him. The others can go to hell and discuss and debate the issue till the lembu2 come home, for all he cares. He has made his point and hopefully that will translate into votes and more support within Umno for him in the immediate future; a sort of instant political pahala for the neo-Islamic Malay armchair warrior, Hang Najib.

Najib said (yes) an Islamic state. MCA via spokesman Ong Ka Chuan said, "No". What about the rest of the 12 component parties' chiefs? Yes or No?
Maybe. See lah which way the wind blows...
Who is the boss, umno or mca? If you believe mca call the shots in this land, you are a bigger fool than ong kah ting.
Nah, u heard from the #2 top gun of the nation (uh, #2 again!), so what say u all other members of BN? Didn't u jeer at DAP and PKR for collaborating with a Islamic party?
Guess now they should ask the same question themselves. Stop pointing finger, cos, it's pointing back at u!!
Common guys, think of it, can a person like Najib survive in an Islamic state? Obviously he does not now what he is talking about. I wonder if he is a practising Muslim, although he is very good at pretending to be one. Unfortunately UMNO is full of people like him. That's why Malaysia is in such a mess.
Remember in the general elections of 1999 the UMNO government and, in particular the MCA, demonised the DAP but taking large advertisments in the media that the DAP was getting into an unholy pact with the devil by teaming up with the PAS for the elections. The basis of this demonisation was that PAS trying to make Malaysia an Islamic state.
Well, what do we have now? MCA is not only in bed with a party trying to make Malaysia an Islamic state. It is already and still in bed with a party who has declared that it has made Malaysia an Islamic state. Being in bed who is effing who? Which is worse? MCA in bed with a party who has made Malaysia an Islamic state or DAP who has rejected PAS’s attempt to make Malaysia an Islamic state? DAP has declared it will not have any pact with PAS for the next elections. MCA is still very happy to sleep with the Islamic party.
Who is the worse hypocrite on this matter? Who is protecting their own political positions and sacrificing principles for office? Does anyone believe that MCA, in the face of their being in bed with the party which has made Malaysia an Islamic state, is defending the position of the non-malays and non muslims? MCA, such two faced liars!!!
WAKE UP, MALAYSIANS. THIS IS A CLARION CALL TO VOTE AGAINST THE BARISAN BUNCH OF CROOKS AND HYPOCRITES.
In the Financial Times report (21 July 2007) on the reinstatement of the Chief Juctice it had this comment:
"Images of bloodied lawyers being beaten by police shocked public opinion, prompting a media clampdown that undermined Mr. Mushaaraf's portrayal of himself as moderate leader committed to democratic reform and transparent government”.
This comment could very well apply to Mr. Abdullah Badawi. He poses as a liberal person, clean leader, a moderate Islamic and a democrat.
The facts tell a different story. As minister of the interior Badawi’s police is well known for their brutality. The number of deaths in police custody has never been properly explained. His “clean” leadership has been evidenced by the increasing corruption, including by and for members of his family. His “good and transparent government” has been undermined by the increasing number of government contracts (goodies) awarded without open tenders, especially to cronies and members of his family. His liberal and religious credentials are eroded by the clampdown of the media on debate on the Islamic state; the NEP; apostasy and the forcible abduction of babies from their mothers in the name of religion; by the forcible abduction of corpses in the name of religion. In almost every walk of life Badawi has created a false image of himself as a “good man” very different from the truth as shown by his behaviour actions and inactions. HE IS A FALSE MAN. In truth, if the misdeeds, actions and inactions of Badawi are closely examined, every instance will show his fundamentalist and extreme beliefs. He is covered with sins of commission and omissions. He is also a coward who will not take any hard decisions even for the good of the country but hide behind generalities.
In the light of all this how is it that the Malaysian people are still fooled by Badawi and, worse, continue to be happy to be fooled.
Why is it that the Malaysian people have less spine or are like jelly fish when to the Pakistanis to confront Badawi. Why do the people continue to accept a false leader? Why is it the people fail to call Badawi to account and, if found wanting, to boot Badawi out.
