Legal Sex Workers As Happy As Women In Other Jobs.

Legal prostitutes are just as happy as women in regular jobs, according to a survey that reports high job satisfaction in parts of the sex industry.

But illegal workers who sell sex on the streets had a much grimmer outlook, with half saying they had been raped or bashed in the past year.

The survey compared the mental and physical health of nearly 250 Queensland prostitutes aged 18 to 57 who worked in registered brothels, at home or on the street.

Legal workers reported similar job satisfaction to women in the general community, but streetworkers were far less happy in the job.

"The general picture is that those women whose families know about their work reported greater job satisfaction than those who kept their work secret," said researcher Charlotte Seib.

***** No country in the world has even remotely succeeded in stamping out prostitution. As long as there are men, that would be a futile effort. Countries like Malaysia, typical hypocrites, while publicly despising and frowning upon sex workers and declaring their profession illegal, privately close both eyes to what can reasonably be termed as a booming industry. However some countries have seen the need to accept reality and legalize prostitution thereby allowing health requirements and standards to be introduced, practiced and maintained.

It may surprise many that a considerable number of these legal sex workers are well educated, have happy families and homes like the rest of the population and as mentioned earlier have a great deal of job satisfaction and are at considerably lower risk than the 'street-worker.' Perhaps there is a need to legalize prostitution in our country at least as a health precaution.

IMHO, the only way you can really tell when a country is ready to legalize the prostitution or not is by asking the children and the parent: who wants to be prostitute when you grow up?
After all, the money can be good, social view can be changed (to frown or to approve) just like other occupations.

Whenever you force underground an activity which is virtually unstoppable, it leaves the door open for it to be controlled by criminal elements. That alone is a good reason to regularise it.
Can't see that ever happening in Malaysia. Too many religous hurdles to overcome.

On a lighter note. When I was a student in Australia, we soon found out that the phone number of the flat we shared was just one digit different from one of these "establishments". We received quite a number of wrongly dialled calls enquiring on their "services". One of our friends dialled the appropriate number just as a joke. They are quite professional, you know, just like phoning any other well run business organisation. They even except Credit cards :-).

This is one of those topics where "damned if you do, damned if you dont". So, I will stake my pinky into this issue and fork out my two cents worth. Hah.

When we (as a safety measure just in case good ole Robin gets attacked! Sorry, Msian!) talk of legalisation, it is difficult for many to see the core issues involved, which is "...allowing health requirements and standards to be introduced, practiced and maintained". Prostitution will exist no matter what, no matter where. You dont believe me? Check this link out then...

Now, I am not trying to pooh-pooh any country or religion. This is the truth. However, legalisation must not result in the glorification of the profession, but rather police and regulate those who has chosen to be prostitutes. And this where those so-called UMNO Skodeng boys from Timbuktu (and baby PAS, you know who lah) who opposed to such legalisation would aim their dirty low blows. They will shout you down and out by stating those who promote such laws are pimps and question the promoters whether they would have their daughters be prostitutes. Dont forget one UMNOPutra Mamak Rempiteer, who I shall not name, you know who lah, was himself reported caught with his pants down with a prostitute. Bolehland at work.

The second, and more important issue which legalisation can affect is organised crime. Face it, you make it illegal, pimps would move in to fill the vacuum. Am I right, people? Take one pimp out, ten more comes in to take his place. Everyday we read of raids and whatnots, yet the taxi drivers of KL seems to know where you can get one lah. Funny woh. Many women smuggled in and/or forced to prostitute in terrible conditions, without access to medical care, abused by their clients, raped by their captors as a form of "initiation", and if discovered by the police... well... remember the "ketuk ketampi" video? They get far worse treatment, trust me. Most public raids are staged press events for the benefit of Joe or Jane Public who keeps wondering whether their tax money is working or not.

But, judging from the recent Skodeng activities, and the propaganda hype for "Islam Hadhari", and dont forget the Taliban boys from PAS, legalisation is as dead as a Mat Rempit jumping out of an airplane without a parachute. And this would leave many women, working in the shadows, subject to continuing abuse, torment, ands humiliation by everyone. Visit Bolehland 2007!

A considerable number of these legal sex workers who are happily marriedm, have kids and have a great deal of job satisfaction? I find that hard to believe. Many years back I read a random survey of the opinion of prostitutes who ply their trade in Britain and the finding, without exception, is that they hate their job - and their clients. It's all for the money, baby, they said.

The debate on whether prostitution should be legalized often ignores the opinions of prostitutes themselves. Both sides of this debate are presented in articles by ex-prostitutes:
I Vote For Legalization (http://www.orato.com/node/1872)
and
Legalization: Institutionalization Of Objectification (http://www.orato.com/node/1854)
Both very interesting.
