US Vice President Dick Cheney Unhurt In Blast At U.S. Base In Afghanistan.

The Taliban said a suicide bomber who killed up to 18 people at the main US base in Afghanistan today was aiming for Vice President Dick Cheney who was visiting at the time.

"We wanted to target ... Cheney," Taliban spokesman Mullah Hayat Khan said by phone from an undisclosed location.

The blast suicide bomber killed 15 Afghans and three foreign troops today at Bagram Air Base, the Afghan interior ministry said.

The attack occurred at a security gate guarded by US troops at the heavily secured base about 60km north of Kabul.

"Initial reports are stating that 18 people were killed and three of them are foreign soldiers," interior ministry spokesman Zemarai Bashary said.

"The 15 others are civilian Afghan workers who wanted to enter Bagram air base for their work. On injuries we do not have exact reports."

US military officials confirmed what they called a "direct attack" on the base. A spokeswoman for Mr Cheney said the vice-president was safe.

The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force confirmed the blast was a suicide attack but could not immediately say how many people were killed or wounded.

***** Since the Vice President's trip to Afghanistan was an unscheduled one, this assassination attempt was probably hastily planned and carried out. Still it must have been too close for comfort for the US Secret Service. That the bomber could have come unchecked right up to the security gate shows a serious lapse and one which could have had tragic consequences, both immediate and long term.

Hello, Malaysian. My pardons 4 not replying 2 your friendly query on an earlier post. Pardons also 4 deviating from the topic of your blog. As a reminder, I am sure you know what phrase 2 look for should I e-mail you!

As 2 my recent activities, I have been busy stirring up a nest of hornets at Malaysia Today. Ha! Ha! Ha! The cows are coming home 2 roost. Do you remember the Suqiu issue, which occured during TDM admin, and prior to 9/11? Remember the ringing of the word "Communist" being hurled about in the same breath as "Ketuanan Melayu"? Ha! Ha! Ha!

Now 4ward 2 post Ops Iraqi Freedom, those very cows are now looking 2wards PRC i.e. a communist country as a counterweight 2 USA. Those cows were literally foaming at their very mouths stating that Communism has not yet been defeated by "US imperialism". And shit, these same cows were willing 2 ignore diplomatic snubs and territorial disputes, silently unevealed by our government, and embrace the relationship with PRC as "abang-adik". Berani pulak cakap "friendly relations" untuk berabad-abad! Someone must have 4gotten about the importance of the Emergency and Chin Peng, who received weapons and cash from PRC in those days.

These are the cows that would not hesitate to blacklist "Apa Khabar Orang Kampong" where former Malay Commies stated that they were fighting against US/British imperialism, and yet sleep in the same bed with Hu Jintao of Communist Party of China. Missionary position, as usual.

I can email you the shortcut link to my latest hijinks if you are interested. Still at Yahoo, old chap?

So, once again, apologies 4 hijacking your space, and hopefully I can get some more Borat moments in the future! BTW, Seriously recommended viewing, Borat : Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefir Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. Damn funny!

well, this is the situation in microcosm isn't it? US presence is the catalyst for violence and killing. The reason bin laden gave for attackng the WTC is because the US military was stationed in areas close to holy islamic sites like mecca and the morally corrupting influences of american lifestyle. So have we left? no have we tried to corral our "lesser selves" and behave morally? no We should come home, stay home and work on our problems AT HOME! What could cheney's visit accomplish that a phone call wouldn't? as usual for this administration, it is all poltics and show.

may be it was not Taliban-lah. May be it was the CIA who set up the whole thing. Conspiracy theory always work. Especially Bush-administration wants to show that what could happen to US soil/citizen if War on Terror is not fought properly...
My bet is: US set up this plan themselves...
