Road Accidents Climbing As More Motorcyclists Perished

With five days of Ops Sikap XII left, the number of road accidents keep on rising and recorded more fatalities especially among motorcyclists.

Since the road safety operation began on Feb 11, a total of 10,630 accidents were recorded nationwide with 151 deaths including 89 deaths among motorcyclists and pillion riders.

Statistics issued by the Federal Police Traffic Department Wednesday, showed 12 lives perished in road accidents nationwide yesterday.

Motorcyclists and pillion riders topped the list with nine deaths, followed by a car passenger, a lorry driver and a cyclist.

A total of 1,010 road accidents were recorded yesterday alone with 322 occurred on federal roads, 316 on municipal roads, 184 on state roads, 147 on highways and 41 on other roads.

Meanwhile 12,312 summonses were issued yesterday bringing the total so far to 122,003 summonses.

***** Does anyone have a bright idea how to arrest this mostly self-inflicted carnage? While the authorities are trying their best to somehow reduce the number of accidents and fatalities, our riding and driving population seem to have a death wish which is averse to reasoning.
